How to mask the area an effect is applied to on an After Effects layer.
Some effects allow you to choose Masks as controls within the effect (Like Scribble and Stroke effects for example). But if you simply want to mask the area an effect is applied to then apply the effect to an adjustment layer, then mask the adjustment layer to determine the area you want to be affected.
Adjustment layer’s effects are applied to all layers that are positioned underneath them in a composition so you may need to precompose the layer along with the adjustment layer so that it doesn’t affect other layers in your comp.

Hi there,
If you want to leave gaps you could try selecting “Active Camera” – gaps will then render with a default camera.

In that case Time Remapping is the answer to your question, probably synched using markers with the time remapping keyframes.

Hi there,
There are a couple of things you could try to create a “write-on” type of effect like this although I’m not sure if they are the actual techniques used here.
One would be to Auto-trace the artwork in Illustrator and then copy and paste the paths to After Effects onto layers. Then use a combination of effects “Stroke”, “Write On”, “Scribble” and “Fill”. All of these effects will allow to you to use paths (or Masks) to animate a kind of “painting over time” effect like this.
It’s a lot of work though, as order of masks has to be considered as does timing the animation with the hand.If you need instructions on how to use these effects you can refer to the After Effects Online Help which is a great guide to start with.

Hi there,
Did you try changing the first keyframe to a Held keyframe? That should work, just right-click on the keyframe and choose “Toggle Hold Keyframe”. This will force the value to remain the same till the next keyframe.

My advice would be to create a Displace Layer map to control the distortion rather then animating the mesh itself. You can do this using Fractal Noise filter. It’s not a straightforward process so easiest for you to study a tutorial on the subject if You’ve never done it before. Hi there,
To fill a masked area with a specified color. Set the Mask Mode to “none” then apply the “Fill” effect. Choose the Mask name in the “Fill Mask” menu and then use the eyedropper to sample the color from the hat. Voila, you’re done! 🙂

Hi there,
there are a few dedicated third party plug-ins that will do this. Like Sapphire’s excellent TV Damage filter. There are also some presets for “Bad TV” style effects in your presets folder but they don’t really have the effect you’re after. However, you can create this “Snow” type of effect with Fractal Noise. You need to adjust the Scale value down to a value of 1, choose Max as the Fractal type and Block as noise type. Sub-scaling set to 100. then animate the Evolution setting to taste depending on duration. You can then add the Bad TV preset on top to give it a bit more authenticity.
