Great news. I’m glad to see Vegas’ useable operating systems expand. I’ve been encouraging a friend to switch from FCP to Vegas for a while, and he almost seems ready to do it, having been fed up with Apple’s changes and being limited to using FCP 7. But he would have to get a Windows computer as it stands.

Yeah, I think you’re right. Even my undersell was an oversell. I guess I had more hopeful thinking than anything.

I don’t get the reaction to Sony and their games, though. Being able to rent games cheaply seems like a godsend compared to spending $60 on a game. Not to mention all the other ways developers and publishers sell games for that much and then skimp on content or make you wait for downloadable patches to fix known bugs.
What I see gamers objecting to in games is microtransactions, meaning you buy a game or download a free game, but in order to continue the game forces you to buy with actual money an item or passage to advance in the game. EA seems to have been doing it a lot.

I loved video games growing up (I would get my stress out from the school week by playing 9 hours of games on Friday nights) and can’t afford the time or money for them now, but I follow video game news. And though this doesn’t give me nearly as much insight as actually gaming does, it seems like a decent reaction to the ridiculous prices of both physical and downloadable games, especially from Sony. I see it as getting more costly than just buying a game if you play online for more than 90 days, but for a lot of single player games it seems like a way of getting players who don’t have as much money and who couldn’t afford the games otherwise.
Again, this is a surface level reading of the situation, which can often be turned upside down with more facts. But it seems pretty sensible given that someone like myself would be more interested in it since I’m one of the people who can’t afford $60 games.
I’ll die happy if I become rich and get to enjoy another 8 hour gaming binge.

I’m wondering if I should upgrade or just build a new computer. The first thing I want is a new graphics card, since I only got my cheap, Nvidia GeForce GTS 450 so I could take advantage of GPU acceleration in Vegas 11 (my Radeon was listed as compatible with Vegas 11 yet it never recognized it).
But if I’m going to do that, I’m wondering if I should get a new CPU and more RAM. Or a new motherboard altogether (this can only take up to 24 GB DDR3 RAM). Or would more RAM at least make a difference for me until I do a full upgrade? Here’s a screencap of my specs.

I wondered about the graphics card. I have a cheap Nvidia GTS 450 (it’s not even compatible with DaVinci Resolve Lite). I don’t want to buy a new graphics card just yet until I decide how advanced of one I want given my now 4 year old computer (3.07 Ghz Intel i7, 12 GB DDR3 RAM, and Windows 7, which to me are still good specifications, but I wonder if a more powerful graphics card wouldn’t be more suitable to a new desktop).

I know it’s too late now, but don’t skimp on getting good audio and having the budget for it in the first place. Christopher Nolan supposedly puts a big emphasis on it to get the actors’ performances since that’s harder to do in ADR. 90% of The Dark Knight uses the location dialogue, though all that gets mixed, EQ’d, etc., before completing the movie.

Sony just came out with this that may be helpful, though I agree with Dave. Not many people have 4K monitors, and even then, there’s not that much benefit to the increased resolution that you couldn’t get by downsampling to 1080p.
