I have no idea, but when Vegas does weird stuff like that, at least for me, closing and re-opening the project can fix it. Or just continuing on and rendering it out will.

I didn’t realize Vegas had a denoiser. I gotta try that.

I’m amazed at how difficult good location audio/dialogue can be even after thinking I’ve got a handle on it with years of shooting. I recently shot interview videos walking around where the host (my mom) talked to people in a crowded theater lobby, and it’s maddening how deficient the audio became even after I tried to get it right on location with my levels and a decent mic and recorder. The Tascam DR-05 has a sturdy build and is inexpensive, but the audio drifts and the pickup pattern with the mics sticking outward instead of in can make for one or the other channels to dominate when I never intended that to.

Purely for educational purposes, here’s what I ended up with, even after using Track Compressor and Audacity to clean up certain spots.

I absolutely believe in paying for good audio equipment on location after experiences like this and am looking into something like an H4N or H6N.

  • What kind of camera do you have?

  • Can you test it out for yourself? I have no idea, though for some DSLRs the camera will overheat around 15 minutes, anyways.

Gotta stop trash talking Vegas with your “Scott Francis with a Mustache” username on the Premiere forums.

  • Track Motion affects all the events across the track. But it’s not the same as Pan and Crop. Try it out and you’ll see what I mean. It won’t let you digitally zoom in/out on an event.

Well, I hope you learned your lesson.

Save was useless here. The backup on the second hard drive at least let me restart from the previous night’s work.

I knew I was missing something when I didn’t try to use a file recovery program, but I had been working since about 8 AM after working until midnight or so last night and my mind went blank. Curses!

[Norman Black] “Rename current VEG to BAK.
    Save VEG file.

If the crash during the save it would seem like they deleted the VEG file.

In contrast, another safer way to do this would be
Save VEG file to a temp file name.
If save successful, then rename current VEG to BAK.
Rename temp name to current VEG name.”

Reading this is like trying to play ping pong while solving a puzzle. I can’t keep any kind of logistical directions in my head.

I just re-edited the video (I couldn’t figure out how I got it about a minute shorter on my lost version without cutting stuff I liked), and now I just save every few minutes a back up to another HD and then switch back to the main project. It’s a little tedious but worth the trouble.
