I should point out that none of the effects I mention do Mid/Side processing, that usually requires manually sending everything to a “master” bus that’s bussed to two additional busses: one with a stereo effect to only have mid, and another to only have sides. Then that’s piped out to the Master out.

Ozone does it in-plugin which is a nice timesaver.

November 11, 2011 at 10:25 pm in reply to: premiere re-rendering unnecessarily

Premiere doesn’t do stream copies. Since you’re on a Mac there is a way to set your sequence preview render to ProRes, and you can export ProRes without too much of a generation loss (there is an Adobe blog on this workflow… I don’t have it but it’s been passed around in these forums).

November 11, 2011 at 3:30 am in reply to: Advice on setting up a small Post house

Is this studio going to be internal to a few people you know, or external to your local area or expertise?

I would assume, as a post house, you’re better off in specializing your rig for something other than straight cutting like After Effects, color correction, or audio mixing.

I fear you may need to tell us what market you’re trying to enter and how you want to position yourself before someone leads you down the wrong path.

November 11, 2011 at 3:15 am in reply to: Slow shutter / stutter effect.

The footage is sped up and isn’t frame blended (aka it just skips frames) in post or it could also be done in-camera with a lower fps… maybe 12 or 8. It also looks like they had the actors slow their movement a bit during filming so it read less jerky in the final product; you get all this hectic texture around the people, but they still appear fairly fluid.

November 10, 2011 at 11:55 pm in reply to: How to improve an old film

    I suggest Magic Bullet’s denoiser for grain/noise removal https://www.redgiantsoftware.com/products/all/magic-bullet-denoiser/

It’s probably one of the slowest rendering effects I own, but the quality is worth it.

Granted there are some techniques to reduce noise including After Effects built-in noise removal plugin (an adaptation of a well known software Adobe bought, Grain Surgery) but I prefer something a little more dedicated.

In terms of “better quality and detail”… this is super vague, but old video always benefits from a little color re-mastering. You can use a combo of After Effects built in curves and other color correctors, or pick up Colorista Free which is a free three-way color corrector https://www.redgiantsoftware.com/products/all/magic-bullet-colorista-free/

*I’m not affiliated with Magic Bullet, I just think a lot of their plug-ins are awesome.

  • Try this:

    1. Open Premiere, make sure your flv is imported in your library panel.

    2. Drag your video file and drop it on the icon at the bottom of the library that you click to create a new sequence. This is a shortcut to match your created sequence exactly to the video you have.

    3. Export your timeline as FLV, 854×480, square pixel, and so on. You should be fine.

854×480, like you stated before is 16:9 and since you aren’t messing with PAR (pixel aspect ratios) changes then there should be no stretching or compression of the image.

  • You’re basically asking for a layered tiff which keeps elements (including their alpha channel) completely separated.

After Effects does not produce this kind of file, at least not through any setting or technique that I am aware of.

November 10, 2011 at 8:12 pm in reply to: How can you create something like this?

Looks easy. It’s just a bunch of column shapes with keyframed movements, sizes, and blend modes and then dirtied up with some flicker and touches of texture.

It looks like it may be using lens blur. A tell tale sign that it’s a composite is the top and bottom edges of these shapes, they blur out to a round end. This would either mean these objects are the same size or smaller than what a camera may capture… or they are the same height as a comp size.

I’m on the fence on if there is some actual photography or if it’s all a composite. The light/color fade around 1:30 doesn’t feel wholly natural, but the dirt/chips in the lens respond to light… but that could be procedural too.

  • I’m sorry, perhaps I’m just confused by how you’ve presented your problem.

    1. Your animator gave you 1280 x 720 (1.0) file.

    2. You’re using Premiere or Adobe Media Encoder to convert it to 1280 x 720 (1.0) in flv (flash video) format.

    3. You played it back and it didn’t look right.

    4. You tried exporting 1280 x 720 (1.2) and it still didn’t look right.

Sound about correct? If you’re using Premiere, did you stick it in a sequence that has different settings than your source player? Where are you playing your flv’s with?
