you’re on the right track.
about progressive vs. interlaced – that depends on the source material – how it was recorded/filmed. if still images, film or a progressive video camera was the original source, then it’s progressive (uncheck those boxes) from an interlaced video camera (hd or sd) then it’s interlaced and leave the boxes checked.if it’s hd material, try the prores422 or prores422hq (high quality) codec (compression) which while being a slightly “destructive” codec, meaning that it takes away some picture information, the quality of the image is still good.
there’s no reason you have to use vegas – do you have mac the ripper?
http://www.mactheripper.org
that will allow you to rip the dvd’s which you can then bring into mpeg streamclip and then into fcp.and yes, reading the manual is helpful, but it’s also good to have someone give you an answer.

when you chose “export to quicktime” from the file menu, that means that you are going to create a quicktime. now you need to decide on the settings for that quicktime, which is what the movie-maker windown is all about. basically you have to decide what kind of compression you want to use (apple motion jpeg, for example) this will depend on what you want to do with the file afterwards.
in order to determine your frame rate, you can open up the original file in quicktime and then under Window->Show Movie Inspector you will bring up a dialog box that will tell you the fps along with the frame size.
you will need to know if your material is interlaced or not – what exactly is it that you’re transforming?

what os do you have? leopard should be able to read the files.

hi elvir,
i’m wondering if you can walk me through how exactly to use this script in very basic language – i’ve tried to use it recently in vegas, what i did was: export the edl –> then tools-scripting-run script (like you said)
then i got a window that asked me to locate the script, which was saved as .vb (not .vb.txt) but when i would navigate to the file location, it did not show up. it simply wasn’t there. any ideas?i don’t use a pc, and i have no idea about scripting language. there seem to be places in the script where i’m supposed to change the variables, but that’s just a guess and i don’t really know what to/how to do it.
any advice is very welcome!

we just tried to use the script the other day – but couldn’t get it to work – probably because neither I or the other editor know anything about scripting. we followed the instructions and saved the script as a .vb file, exported the edl, and then tried to run the script, but when we were supposed to locate the script in the finder that opens up for you to locate the script, it wouldn’t appear. we would navigate to the folder where the script was saved in but it simply wouldn’t appear in the finder window – ? i have no idea.
looking at the script it also seems like you need to change some of the parameters inside of it, but again, i have no idea, really.
have you tried it?

i hope i’m not wrong here, but the monitor isn’t the issue, it’s how you will play it back. because ntsc is 30fps and pal 25, if you don’t have the capacity to play back at 30fps the monitor won’t matter.
if you play back from a computer file that should be no problem, just adjust the playback settings. if you play from a tape or dvd, then you have to check out your equipment first.
and your monitor will play whatever you send it or whatever you set your monitor at, aspect ratio-wise.
please correct me if i’m wrong, somebody…

yes, i know. i’ve been reading tons of posts. it’s a cruel world :).

Does exporting as .mxf preserve the timecode? Would I then be able to import the edl into fcp and re-connect the media?
