hi suzin,

when you chose “export to quicktime” from the file menu, that means that you are going to create a quicktime. now you need to decide on the settings for that quicktime, which is what the movie-maker windown is all about. basically you have to decide what kind of compression you want to use (apple motion jpeg, for example) this will depend on what you want to do with the file afterwards.

in order to determine your frame rate, you can open up the original file in quicktime and then under Window->Show Movie Inspector you will bring up a dialog box that will tell you the fps along with the frame size.

you will need to know if your material is interlaced or not – what exactly is it that you’re transforming?

All (that sounds easy)I want to do is copy a DVD to mov that I can drop onto the FCP TimeLine. It’s all legal. I have just started editing a monthly TV Show. See a sample, if this helps

All these independent film makers are sending in their DVD. I need to rip, make MOV. drop onto time line. What I have been doing is using VEGAS which will rip and bring into it’s timeline. Then I render mov. bring over to the mac drop it on the timeline, render etc. I know there is a way of cutting out the vegas process.

More information than you needed. I have only started with FCP and Mac 12 weeks ago. I am so slow at computers and I am on my own. IF I can figure this all out it would be great

hey suzin,

you’re on the right track.
about progressive vs. interlaced – that depends on the source material – how it was recorded/filmed. if still images, film or a progressive video camera was the original source, then it’s progressive (uncheck those boxes) from an interlaced video camera (hd or sd) then it’s interlaced and leave the boxes checked.

if it’s hd material, try the prores422 or prores422hq (high quality) codec (compression) which while being a slightly “destructive” codec, meaning that it takes away some picture information, the quality of the image is still good.

there’s no reason you have to use vegas – do you have mac the ripper?

and yes, reading the manual is helpful, but it’s also good to have someone give you an answer.

mac the ripper only adds another application to the equation It all can be done right in mpeg streamclip.

Sorry, but you’re further complicating the matter. There’s absolutely no reason whatsoever to use the mactheripper and Streamclip. Streamclip is a much better app than mactheripper and perfectly capable of doing the entire job in just one step.

Suzin needs to become fearless and needs to learn to tryout new things without fear. These apps are not destructive, so if at first one does not succeed, you try again until you do.

yes, thanks for correcting that. of course if you can get the files off of the dvd with no problem then you don’t need any other program than streamclip.

suzin always run the “fix timecode breaks” option in the menu as sometimes it won’t detect them then you end up missing a few minutes of footage.

the only other issue is watch out for the field order.

sometimes its lower, sometimes its upper, I always test first
a very short few seconds to be sure.

Not to demean Streamclip which is a great app, you can capture right into FCP from a decent DVD player, set your capture to non-controllable device.

very true, but then you are waiting for it all to play out in realtime.

with mpeg stream clip its much faster than that.
