[Robin S. Kurz] “I personally wouldn’t care if they even made it $5. Either way, I’m not interested in paying ransom money for my own work and data”

Your own work and data? You don’t have to use the storage options of the CC service. I don’t. Having said that even if they had the CS 12.5 Master Collection on DVD for $299.99 and only $49.99 for the upgrades (DVDs) you still wouldn’t buy it because you hate Adobe and I can prove it.

[Robin S. Kurz] “Even when I had a legitimate license for CS6 and before, I still only ever used a hacked version after being ****ed over by disappearing “activations” at the worst possible times and needing hours if not days of getting it figured out and back to work.”

What are you talking about? How would you have disappearing activations that took you hours if not days to get it figured out prior to CC? There was no activation prior to CC. I have both CS 4 and CS 5.5. You don’t even need an internet connection. You only have a product code key/serial number to enter. That is all. There is no activation to dissapear.

I could talk out my arse and I say “I hate FCPX because I was getting ****ed over by disappearing “activations” at the worst possible times and needing hours if not days of getting it figured out and back to work”.

It is not wise to complain about a problem that does not exists. Anyone who has CS 3.0 or even CS 5.5 knows what you stated is pure BS.

Even when we talk about the CC I have not had any activation issues since I joined in May of 2014. You claim you had dissapearing activations even prior to CS 6.0. I say you are talking out your arse because there was no activation to dissapear. Having said that if the CC was only $12.99 or even $14.99 a month I would be OK with it. Adobe offers a lot of good products for graphic design, web design, print production, audio and video and now even 3D.

I do agree with others that Adobe did start to realize they would not always be able to offer huge upgrades like CS 5.0 and CS 6.0 where people really needed the new features so they implemented the CC. I don’t mind the CC paradigm. It is just to expensive at $49.99 a month. Adobe used to offer great products at a great price but not anymore. It would be great if at NAB 2017 they announced the price for the CC would be dropped to $19.99 a month.

[Dom Curulli] “The part I’m not sure about is where to keep media cache and premiere previews (on the OS SSD?) and if scratch disk locations matter, as I did some research and read that scratch disks only affect media ‘captured’ or recorded within premiere is that correct?
Also, does it matter that the project save file is on a slower server drive and not local, does that affect anything other than save time?”

I am not sure what you are trying to do. Your RAID is really small. It might be wise to stripe 4-8 hard drives that are 2TB-4TB in size and have your scratch disk and cache files on the same drive as your project files (the RAID). If your RAID gets full just store them on 2TB, 3TB or even 4TB hard drives using hot swappable drive bays. I am not sure if this helped or not but I have provided a video of hot swappable drives bays and rack gear.

  • Did you try to capture form a DVD player or a Blu-ray player? Those should work without any problems. It could be a driver issues. The Intensity Shuttle drivers can be fussy.

    Something like this:
    https://www.amazon.com/Tendak-Composite-S-Video-Converter-Upscaler/dp/B00V2...”

You can try it but I am not sure how good the image quality will be. Have you tried all the settings for the Intensity Shuttle?

  • [Michael Trenton]
    Btw
Nice videos comparing the Intensity Shuttle to the ADVC 110 there Andy. I was particularly surprised to learn GPU acceleration resulted in poorer image quality when monitoring.”

Thanks. You paid close attention. Until PP CS 6 Premiere could not out put to IEEE Fire Wire devices. It can do it know but software mode might be the best option depending on the timeline. Since it only outputs to 720X480 you can probably drop down t 1/2 or 1/4 and still get a nice clean image on an NTSC monitor. If it is a standard definition timeline you will get plenty of real-time effects in software only mode. I am not to bumbed out about it. At least does out put anything to the DV converter.

Concerning the problems you are having a TBC would probably fix the problem but I cannot say for sure. Having said that have you tried downloading an older driver just to test things out? The drivers can be fussy at times.

January 25, 2017 at 1:36 am in reply to: Avid VS Premiere VS FCPX VS Edius?

[Lance Bachelder] “I had to check the date of the original post – I thought I had lost it for a moment. Maybe someone will post if I can use my Digisuite with FCPX to capture from my XL1?”

I remember the Digisuite systems from Matrox as well as the DPS Velocity systems and even the True Vision Products before Pinnacle bought them out and later Avid bought Pinnacle. Of course Pinnacle also bought out Fast Multimedia and a few others.

My first video card was a Pinnacle System DC 10+. I also used to have a Matrox RT 2000. Then I bought the Pinnacle Pro One and later the Canopus DV Storm. I used the Canopus Storm the most.

I love using 3rd party hardware for client previews.

I wish other people would post images of their editing suites and their results.

[Craig Seeman] “Affinity does continue to make moves as both Photo and Designer are now cross platform and next up will be their competitor to Adobe InDesign. Affinity’s prices are so low that even Adobe’s $10/mo can start to look expensive.”

I will have to keep an eye out for these other programs. Having said that InDesing is awesome.

January 24, 2017 at 4:36 am in reply to: Avid VS Premiere VS FCPX VS Edius?

[Shane Ross] “[andy patterson] “Premiere Pro just pushed both devices beyond their intended purpose. ”

In what way? Their intended purpose is to input and output a video signal. What does Premiere do to them beyond that?”

Edius 8.0 can output HD using the Intensity Shuttle but not a native Red One R3D 4k timeline. Premiere could do it. I am not saying Avid and FCPX cannot. Edius also needed the timeline to be a broadcast compliant format as well. Premiere Pro can output just about anything.

[Shane Ross] “[andy patterson] “Who knows maybe FCPX or Avid can get even more functionality out of 3rd party devices than Premiere Pro.”

What functionality are you looking for? AJA/BMD/MATROX all offer hardware up conversion and down conversion…and HD cross conversion. And scaling from 4K to HD and SD. What else are you expecting? NO NLE utilized them for any hardware acceleration of any sort.”

I know you responded to my other comments but in case other people missed it. For IEEE DV devices Premiere can maintain aspect ratio (hardware or software) so you can take a 1200 X 400 video projects for websites and see it on the old CRT monitor. Edius could only use standard NTSC timline with the ADVC 110. I wish there was an option to maintain the aspect ration when using the Intensity Shuttle with Premiere Pro but perhaps it would make the Mercury Playback Engine explode : )

Maybe Avid, FCPX or Sony Vegas can maintain the aspect ratio of 1800 x 800 by letter boxing using the Intensity Shuttle. Premiere could not and Edius will not output anything other than what the hardware was designed for. I would love to use my two computer monitors for for the GUI and use the Intensity Shuttle for real-time playback for anything from 4K and HD content to banner ads at 1200 X 400. Premiere does a good job overall but I wish I could make it work with the Intensity Shuttle using any aspect ratio. I felt let down that Premiere Pro could not and that is why I tested Edius. In the process of testing Edius I found Premiere Pro capable of doing much more than the Edius software. I wish I had a Mac and FCPX to test out FCPX.

January 24, 2017 at 12:40 am in reply to: Avid VS Premiere VS FCPX VS Edius?

[Shane Ross] “[andy patterson] “Can FCPX out put any aspect ratio using the AVDC 110 or the Intensity Shuttle? ”

The Canopus is SD only…so only output ratio it does is 4:3. The Intensity Shuttle does HD and SD…so it can output 16:9 HD…and even downconvert that to 4:3 SD…either letterboxed or squeezed.”

That is true but Edius could not output 4K or even HD using the ADVC 110. Edius could output SD timelines only. That is what the ADVC 110 was designed to do. Premiere Pro added some extra functionality. Premiere could also output 4K to HD. Edius could not. The Intensity Shuttle was only designed for HD but Premiere can get a little extra functionality out of the device by outputting a 4K timeline using the Shuttle.

[Shane Ross] “[andy patterson] “Can Sony Vegas out put 1800 X 800 using the Intensity Shuttle?”

No. Those IO devices only do broadcast frame sizes….720×480, 720×486, 1280×720, 1920×1080. 1800×800 isn’t a video signal format…none of them output to that.”

It would not have the pixels count of 1800 X 800 but Sony Vegas may have a retain aspect ratio option for the Intensity Shuttle. I wish Premiere Pro did. Premiere does have that option for all IEEE Fire Wire DV converts (not just the ADVC 110). Premiere can output 2100 X 800 to the ADVC 110. Edius would not. It is kind of cool to do 1200 X 400 banner ads for website on the old SD monitor using the Canopus ADVC 110. The 1200 X 400 does get down converted to SD (720 X 480) but the motion graphics are super smooth. I also like the look of the CRT monitors. I am not saying FCPX cannot do the same thing. I admit most people are not going to output Red One R3D 4.5K to mini DV tape or Digital Beta. I just like seeing my website work on the SD monitor as a reference.

[Herb Sevush] “A word of advice since you haven’t been posting on this forum for a long time and maybe you’ve mistaken this place for someplace else — it gets very confrontational here, and quite heated from time to time — but I would suggest you leave off the “little buckaroo” business, or any other name calling for that matter.”

I call all my friends and even my girlfriend little buckaroo. They call me big buckaroo. I don’t see it as mean spirited nor do any of the people I hangout with. Having said that if you think others on this forum think it might be mean I will stop using the word buckaroo.

I actually got the name from Buckaroo Bonzia. I did not see the movie I just like to use the name buckaroo.

Sorry if it was taken offensively.
