    Tom,

I will try your method but it seems to me that it would be better to have 1 HD pixel represent 1 SD pixel meaning having a 720p clip set to 100% in a SD timeline then to stretch a clip forcing FCP to make 1 pixel into many pixels. Unless for some reason FCP handles upresing better then it does rendering HD pixels as SD pixels.

“you’ll be putting 720 pixels into 720” No don’t think so. the matrox will still be scaling 1280 down to 720. A rendered 1280×720 clip at 178% will still be treated by the matrox as a 1280×720 clip right? your logic suggests that a 720p clip at 178% would be seen by the matrox as a 227840×128160 clip.

What do I mean by scale a clip up? I mean I want to use 100% of the res of my 720p clip inside the SD timeline. I want to be able to set the scale up to “100”on my 720p footage inside the motion tab. think of it as a digital zoom. don’t know how else to describe it.

yeah sorry i should have gone over that. yes i did render everything in 8bit uncompressed SD and matrox playback is to 8bit uncompressed.

so if i can get each clips to be imported in stereo each channel will be set to pan either left of right rather then to zero?

if thats the case i will need to look my options in xdcam transfer since i don’t use fcp’s log and transfer.

i had this problem once when tyring to use an older G4 macbook(or whatever they were called then) to capture footage on the road.

All I can say is check and then double check your capture and av settings.

also try capturing straight to the internal hard drive as this has worked for me in the past. I know it isn’t ideal but I believe fcp 5 may have some bugs with capturing to firewire drives on older macs.

    graeme

what is the advantage of using cinema tools to get from 50i to 24p over using the 25-1 option in the film converter? just wondering

thanks russ i am actually aware of difference… between using filters like nattress and allow fcp to do its thing.

I as more concerned with which would be eiser to convert to 24 or 23.9 and how to set up the sequence. I wasn’t planning on rendering. my intention is to either use compressor or nattress or cinema tools.

I believe i will just go with 24 since the nattress filter demo only converts to 24 and not 23.9

as for the dvd issue i think i am going to do some tests.

Okay at the top right corner of your sequence there is tab with the tab of your sequence in it… right below that there is a button that says “RT” this controls the resolution at which FCP will playback your video. This is not related to your sequence settings. However, if your sequence is not set up correctly and you are ,for instance, editing HD into a SDV sequence then yes you will be losing resolution.

In the future you should always post your version of FCP as well as hardware info in your signature when having technical problems.

    Hope this helps

    whats your RT setting?
the resolution in the canvas should match your sequence RT settings.
