I’ll check it out this week sometime. Right now the update for FCPX isn’t even showing up for me. I know I can force it by trashing the program and re-downloading, but I figure its a mad dash at the App Store right now, and I’m not in a hurry.

I’ve noticed this happening when I apply effects I created myself in Motion. If you open the background tasks, you might see it “loading effects project” or something to that effect. Once it’s loaded, the render bar goes away.
It doesn’t have to be a homemade Motion effect, but its probably related to large Motion effects projects.
If there are no effects on your clips…I don’t know what to tell you.

Well, we should be able to just Lift from Storyline, instead of only Lift from PRIMARY Storyline. It would solve your problem if you could just lift the clip you want to move out of the secondary storyline and leave a gap in its place.

Tom wasn’t asking about P2 because he didn’t know. He was asking because P2 doesn’t tell you what CODEC you were recording to. It’s like saying, “I recorded it to tape.”
Since you said HVX200, I think the possible choices are DV, or DVCProHD. Which of these codecs are your clips?

10.6.8 is Snow Leopard. Lion is 10.7. Which is it (my guess is 10.7)?

PS: BTW, I’ve seen this issue before from someone. I can’t remember what it was he was using (I think DV), but transcoding the media to ProRes solved the problem.

It takes longer to say than to actually do. It’s really not that many steps. If there were a shortcut that Lifts from the Primary Storyline and simultaneously creates a secondary storyline out of those clips, then that would be awesome, but I’ve actually used the workflow I suggested several times and its very simple and easy.
Of course I typically leave the audio in the primary storyline and just insert clips into the secondary for broll, but you seemed interested in adding clips down the line instead of in sequence, so this seemed like the better approach.
By changing audio to a secondary storyline, you only have to do it once, as opposed to adding connected clips, selecting them and making them a secondary storyline. Then adding more connected clips down the line and continuing to do the same.

Craig. Based on how you’re working with the secondary storyline, I believe the best workflow for you might be the following:
Edit audio into primary storyline. When ready to add broll, select all the audio tracks, right click and choose Lift from Primary storyline. That will move all the audio into connected clips below the primary storyline.
Select all the audio again and hit CMD+G to turn the audio into a secondary storyline.
Use overwrite to place your first broll clip into the primary storyline (so that the audio will be connected to it rather than a gap), and then you can edit broll as normal into the primary storyline.
