Quicktip: Easy Fading in/fading out connected clips
Posted by T. Payton on September 20, 2011 at 3:35 pmI’ve been doing this a while and just forgot to post it. Although you can’t currently add transitions to connected clips but you can add filters. Therefore just create a filter for the Motion “Fade In/Fade Out” behavior.
You have decent control and it works great:
Here is a version you can download if you don’t have Motion 5.
BTW. While you are at it, the other Motion behaviors are fantastic to have in FCP X, such as Grow/Shrink, Spin and Throw.

September 20, 2011 at 3:53 pmGood idea but it looks like Apple have just solved that one in 10.0.1:
One-step Transitions on Connected Clips
Add a transition to a connected clip or between multiple connected clips without manually creating a secondary storyline.

September 20, 2011 at 5:19 pmAvailable and playing with it and yes you can add transitions to connected clips making them automatically become secondary storylines.

It’s a little bit annoying though that it makes them into storylines – if you’ve got two conseecutive clips that you add a transition to that you then want to move apart, you have to break apart the storyline to do so which means that any other transitions that might have been attached to any of the other clips in the storyline get lost as well.
It’s certainly a solution, but not an entirely perfect one. Still not complaining – at least it’s another step forward.

September 20, 2011 at 8:30 pmYeah, I’m thinking that if they keep working on it long enough, they will come up with the next evolutionary paradigm: video tracks.

September 20, 2011 at 8:59 pmWell, we should be able to just Lift from Storyline, instead of only Lift from PRIMARY Storyline. It would solve your problem if you could just lift the clip you want to move out of the secondary storyline and leave a gap in its place.
