Sorry, I had AE on the brain. I initially just wanted to correct the info that had been passed to you about importing Motion projects into AE. After that, I was commenting on the likelihood of Adobe providing ANY kind of compatibility with Motion being slim. I mentioned AE, but the same thinking holds for Premiere as well. AE is Adobe’s compositing solution and it has a much larger user base than Motion anyway. There’s really no incentive to provide any compatibility for a competing product like that.
FCP is a special exception because they are aggressively trying to seize a beachhead in post-production and enticing editors and production companies away from FCP by offering compatibility is a good way to do it. Especially since FCPX left legacy projects in serious doubt. Adobe must’ve thought it was their birthday.

First off, you can no longer import Motion projects into AE and have them show up. I’m not sure what changed, but it was either Motion 4, or CS 5, or a combination of the two and that particular workflow is no more.
Secondly, you’re unlikely to get any connectivity between Motion and AE at all. Motion users are a VERY small percentage of FCP users. While Adobe has a great business incentive to provide FCP support (in service of luring customers), that incentive just isn’t there to provide support for Motion. You can obviously export from Motion and import into Premiere, but that’s likely all you’ll ever get.
After Effects can be scary if you’re used to Motion because like a lot of Adobe products, it’s been built upon for over 10 years and there is a lot it can do. If your Motion projects are standard 3D and not in the need of replicators and particle emitters, you can probably pick up AE fairly quickly. It’s always good to have a working knowledge of AE in my opinion.

Thanks for that Chris. I never understood where that damn term came from. It all of a sudden just started being used in all kinds of computer commercials. I put it in the same category as Hemi. To this day, I still don’t know what a hemi is and why I should knock down old ladies to get one in my truck.
The more I learned about “cloud” computing, to more I kept wondering whether or not I was missing something. Surely there had to be more to it than what I was already doing with my computer? I guess not.

If the project only references one event, then I don’t see an issue doing it from the finder. If your project references media from multiple events, I might be tempted to back it up from within FCPX.

Looks like a bug, but was a different timeline view being used? Some functions are graphically blocked if the timeline view is on say Waveform Only, or Video Filmstrip Only, or the chicklet view.

This is actually an interesting thought. Personally, I think Apple has an uphill battle to gain acceptance of their new paradigm since the old one has been in place for 30 years based on paradigm that has been around more than 100. Not that FCPX is really THAT radically different in practice. Sure the terminology has changed, but you still build a sequence in a timeline and sort clips into bins. It’s different enough to cause people to stumble though, particularly if they weren’t expecting it.

Actually, I was trying to point out that he probably lacks the patience to learn a new editing system quickly.

True, but if Toby’s friend is a vlogger, I would take that with a grain of salt.
Personally, if they fixed 3 things…2 things actually (multicam and export OMF, AAF, XML), I would work on it in a heartbeat for the multi-camera competition show I’m cutting right now. A vlogger’s not going to need or care about the incredibly powerful organizational tools FCPX has. For wrapping my head around lots of video, it works great. I may stumble a bit in the cutting stage, but no more than I did in the early years production years with FCP. Some things are much more handy in TV show post environment with FCPX.

Look it’s obvious that you’ve got a man-crush on him. That’s fine. I just think it’s funny how you position FCPX as a “cheap” editor targeted for barely knowledgeable vloggers, and then criticize me for not considering him a PRO because he interviewed James Cameron.
And for the record, I made no mention about whether or not he is “pro” or even “pro enough.” I don’t make distinctions like that.
But I do question the validity of his opinion on FCPX based solely on his own admissions. He obviously barely used it (the video is dated the day after FCPX was released), and he even admits that his friends like it and maybe he needs to learn how to use it.

The guy has the attention span of a gerbil. The only thing he’s typical of is ADHD, and why you shouldn’t take Ritalin while pregnant.
But go ahead and invite him in. I’m sure he’d have lots of wonderful things to say about the planes that are flying overhead in his neighborhood.

Some cameras will break clips apart but continue recording instantaneously…I thought that was your issue.
