chances are that the codec used in these old clips are not FCP (nor FCE) native but rather a non standard codec the support fro which was provided by a third party component such as Perian (https://www.perian.org) … do you happen to know what codec it is that these files are using? there are other ways to do this, but MediaInfo Mac from https://mediainfo.massanti.com/ … is an excellent (and free) clip analyzer that will tell you pretty much anything you might ever (or never) want to know about a media file

Bugger. Well if all else has failed then its pointless to carry on struggling with XDCAM HD/EX so you’re taking the best option available to you at this time :/

I still wish I knew what was going on with your setup tho :/. Theres a good deal of general aversion to Long GOP based editing in pro circles, and mostly for good reason (eg performance) sometimes for bad reasons (eg ignorance) but stability is not (or shouldn’t be) one of those reasons. XDCAM HD/EX is, after all’s said and done, just plain old Long GOP MPEG2 editing, and whilst we all know that that’s a considerably more complex operation than intraframe format editing, well it’s not exactly rocket science either (and Apple have had it licked for years with HDV)

Clearly there are issue with XDCAM HD/EX handling on your setup, and clearly you’re not alone in seeing these issues … but nonetheless I’d still argue that it is not in and of itself an issue with the XDCAM HD/EX codec nor your MacPro or FCP’s general ability to handle it.

It sure is a puzzler, and I (almost) wish I had a machine suffering these problems so I could sit down and figure out exactly what it is. That said, I don’t envy anyone trying to actually get a job finished on a system suffering such critical problems.

Hope the transcode solves it (or at least bypasses it) for you.

Darryl, if your project is a multi camera one then you really don’t want to be buttoning on and off in camera anyway, you want each camera to be jam synced to the same timecode so that the angles can be easily matched up … at the very least you want them each to be recording to TOD or free run timecode in which case if you do button on/off then you’ll want to capture each clip separately anyway. When you have all the clips from each angle imported then you can use FCP’s Make Multiclip Sequnece to arrange the clips from each angle into a chronologically correct sequence for the multiclip sources.

Not sure exactly what your question is here Daryl .. but yes, I have worked with XDCAM HD recorded in camera with continuos clip record enabled. Nothing to be afraid of at all, everything works as normal, its just a means of bypassing the recording & ingest of multiple individual clips (it works more like good old fashioned tape recording whereby you can log and capture chunks of your footage without regard to when the cameraman was buttoning on/off). Actually its a little bit like having the best of both worlds.

Kai is right Erik, you’re misunderstanding something somewhere along the line … ProRes is not frame rate dependent, it works fine with PAL frame sizes and frame rates, just take a look in the Easy Setups and you’ll see that they are all there plain as day.

It sounds like you need Tiffen’s own DFX plugin collection (used to be Digital Film Labs 55mm collection) … the Vari-Star will do what you’re after I think. A very nice collection for 150 bucks. 15 day free trial.

Our COW friendly buddy Bouke created a useful tool for reconnecting FCP media based on reel & timecode data rather than file name … not free (but extremely reasonably priced) and absolutely priceless if and when faced with the otherwise impossible

Also in the shopping list of troubleshooting steps … delete your thumbnail cache folder (remarkably efficacious in speeding up launch time) or the all time favorite, trash your preferences (Digital Rebellion’s excellent and free Preference Manager app does that and much more)
