Anyway, its annoying that if you preview your XDCam Material with the Sony Transfer there is no large preview available you can send to an external viewer or monitor.
Thats correct. The XDCAM Transfer app downloads and thereafter lets you view the low res proxies so as to make your logging decisions, those proxies are not really of high enough resolution to support large screen playback.
The workflow is to view the proxies, mark/log the clips needed and import … the process is sequential: view a clip, mark/log areas for ingest, press import, view the next clip, mark/log areas for ingest, press import, view the next clip, … etc. By the time you have finished logging then most of your media will already have imported in the background and you can begin your edit; the remaining clips will continue to import whilst you edit.

No. In this regard, Log and Transfer is available for XDCAM EX workflows only, not for XDCAM HD formats. The prescribed method is to use XDCAM Transfer.

Indeed. Bizarrely they let you log in the transfer app but then don’t carry that logging info into FCP … one sometimes wonders what planet the Sony Mac app devs live on.

Not strange Jason. The codecs and setups etc are part of FCS and have nothing to do with XDCAM Transfer … however the Sony XDCAM Import and Export components that can be found in FCP’s File > Import and File > Export menu are not a native part of FCP and are only installed when you install XDCAM Transfer.
Note that you don’t need the Import component to use FCP’s own Log and Transfer interface with XDCAM EX footage as that support is now native in FCP7, but you do need XDCAM Transfer’s Export component if you want to export your back to the raw XDCAM EX/HD format.

You don’t really want to use Compressor (clunky) or FCP (can’t do it) for Optical Flow Retiming … best to send it to Motion. It’s explained in the manual.
