Judging from the screen shot Michael, there seems to be something wrong with the aspect of your source footage … it looks like you have the “Anamorphic” flag checked when it should not be. Your 720p HD footage is viewed natively at 16:9, its not Anamorphic 16:9, so you need to go to your browser window, in list view, and scroll through the columns at right until you see the “Anamorphic” column heading, then un-tick (click on) those tick marks that you see adjacent to your source clips.
While you’re at it, can you confirm that you do indeed want to create a letterboxed 4:3 edit, as your screenshot shows?
Lastly, can you list all of the clip item’s format properties for your source footage, plus note what the camera was for the source and how you captured/ingested the footage. Also list all of the sequence settings for your edit timeline and also note the intended target viewing medium (eg how do you plan to deliver this edit and to whom).

The only options are MOTU and IOHD…as they connect via firewire. But then again, that won’t work as you only have one firewire bus and once you attach the MOTU or IOHD to the computer, it’s used up.
Nope. Unlike the IoHD, the MOTU V4HD does not hog the firewire bus Shane, you can connect and use a FW800 drive in series, so you would be able to use it on the laptops without the ExpressCard/34 slot.
Nonetheless, all that tech (and it packs in a lot) doesn’t come cheap. I’m with the herd that if having a mobile edit setup is not a necessity then the extra money would be better spent on lower cost I/O device together with a MacPro tower as host.

On that 15″ MBP I think your sole option for I/O is the MOTU V4HD, if you can upgrade to the 17″ MBP with the ExpressCard/34 slot then your choices open up a bit to include the Matrox MXO2 line and the AJA IoHD / Io Express … and if you can swap for a tower then you’ve the full gamut of choices from all the usual vendors.

That’s pretty unusual behavior Michael and its certainly not how FCP usually works. FCP allows the option to control the automatic scaling up (to fit) behaviour, but there is no control over scaling down (to fit) control … it always scales down to fit, yet you’re saying that your system is not?
Check your window zoom level in the Canvas as it may be that you are simply not looking at full canvas image (I know, its unlikely but its worth checking)
Failing that, double click the clip instance in question to loads it in the Viewer and confirm for us the Scale value show in the Motion tab.
Now select Modify menu > Scale to Sequence … does it show correctly now?

One option would be to export back to disc in HD and then use the camera or deck in AVC mode to dub directly via firewire to DV tape

If you are drag and dropping then you need to drag the MXF into the CLIP folder, not to the top level of the XDCAM disc
As to the export path, you should be able to select the disc directly from the “Exporting to” popup or pressing the “Choose” button and navigating to it from the subsequent Open dialog

You might want to drop a quick note to Peter Barrett (aka Fearless) as he’s done just this in the past … a very nice guy, he used to be a regular contributor to the FCP forums especially on the XDCAM workflow front but has been quiet of late. Goodness Peter, you make it sound rather like you are the only person who has a clue eh? The rest of us must surely all be woolly headed idiots. Actually most of us just get on with the job at hand, we discuss issues here, share workarounds and occasionally have a good old group whinge about the terrible state of affairs … but on the whole we avoid issues by keeping abreast of the potential pitfalls and adopting best work practices so as to avoid them (I can’t remember the last time I got an “operation not allowed” message) … if when something does crop up then we simply report those issues to each other here and elsewhere (so as to help others avoid the problem) and to Apple at their feedback page (or for those who are beta testers then perhaps directly to the product managers) and then we move on. As to “Why has this issue been happening with Final Cut for years it seems?” well what exactly is your issue? All you note is that you’ve been plagued by problems. Are you sure its not because you are simply unfamiliar with the new workflows you need to adopt … goodness knows I had the same problems when I first switched from Linear to Lightworks and from Lightworks to Avid and from Avid to FCP and from FCP to Edius etc etc etc

New version of XDCAM Transfer 2.11 is now posted to our support site this version supports new features of new XDCAM EX products and as well for XDCAM EX ONLY it will work under Apple Snow Leopard – Unfortunately the FAM driver for XDCAM optical HD and 422 products will not work under Snow leopard at this time and requires more development work – It will likely be until March for it, along with full support for our software on Windows 7. There will also be very soon a new version of the LOG&Transfer Plugin for FCP under Snow Leopard.
