MXF4Mac’s MXF Import would allow you to export/take your native AVID IMX files / exports and work with them directly in FCP.

Alternatively you can try exporting native IMX using AVID’s XDCAM Exporter function and then bring the resultant MXF’s back in into FCP using Sony’s free XDCAM Transfer tool.

That voiceover tool is there primarily for quick ‘n dirty stuff, like news people would do… but since they rarely know how to use it, the tool is pretty much useless.

A bizarre and inflammatory statement Dave. Indeed the VO Tool is a great tool for quick and dirty punch in punch out audio recordings “like news people would do” …. but contrary to your statement, in my experience, those folks know exactly how to use the tool and regularly do so with ease, apparently far better than some others. “Useless”? Far from it.

Before you throw yourself off the nearest bridge you may want to simply try opening your brother’s FCE project file using your copy of FCP … as long as the version of FCE you were using is not newer than the version of FCP you are using then you should be able to do that. If that’s a problem then you could see if someone else were able to open that file for you in their newer version of FCP and then pass you back a version of the project in a format that your setup will be able to open. Once you have the original project open in FCP then you should be able to adjust the sequence settings to match the original source format and reconform the sequence’s clip instances properties to properly match the original source/new sequence properties (ie remove any auto scaling and/or distortion that may have been applied). From there on in you should be back on track. Sounds like a long winded process but in practice its not too bad, and at the end of the day it’ll either have worked (yippee) or not (bugger), but either way no harm in trying.

Do you have FCP or similar, or are you looking only for a Mac based third party utility for this? One such tool might be Gallery’s Virtual VTR software https://www.virtualvtr.com/

If you have Parallels Desktop, VMWare Fusion or similar then one of these might be suitable:

Might be FCP version specific, as it seems to work just fine here (on FCP 7.0.1) regardless of the xml version used for export and regardless of whether the clip is is used or unused. Glad you found a workaround anyway.
