In FCP 6.0 what is the effect when trying to shadow the entire screen besides one item like someone running in a crowd of people. Almost like a binocular effect where everything is dark besides what’s in the binos view. I cant find it but see it used obviously very often. thanks

    That’s a matt.

In Video Filters you will find it in Matt>>Mask Shape… Apply it, then in choose Oval in filters tab and adjust as necessary. You can add a soft edge too by apply the Soft Edges filter, also in the Matt directory.

Thanks. That is exactly what I needed. Is it possible with the same effect (or another) to keep the rest of the screen in view but blurred and the subject in focus instead of the rest of the screen black?

That’s done by making a duplicate layer of the same video with the matt applied, and then checking the “invert” box, on the matt filter of the second layer, which will make it affect the exterior of the circle. Then you can change the opacity of the layer in the motion tab and add a gaussian blur as well.

Maybe have a try with this, you should find it’ll do what you’re after reasonably easily : https://web.me.com/andymees/Free_and_Easy/main/Entries/2008/3/19_Andy’s_Region_Blur_3.html

Jeeze Andy, you’ve taken the entire thought process out it. You’re singlehandedly creating an entire generation of twenty-somethings who have no idea how stuff is is actually created. 🙂

    Nice plugin though…
