Thats almost certainly not going to work Ed, but at less than 80% full one would assume the media arrays should have been up to the task. To what codec you were attempting to capture? And did you test capturing to any other codec?

If you are not in FAM mode then you’re in A/VC mode right? In that case you should be able to use FireWire for deck control from the F70’s “i.LINK” port.

You need to download 2 versions of XDCAM Transfer to get this to work for now …
First you need the XDCAM Transfer 2.5.1 software found here : https://www.sony.ca/xdcamex/software.htm
Second you need XDCAM Transfer 2.11.0 found here : https://support.sonybiz.ca/esupport/eSupportHome.asp

Install version 2.5.1 first .. after this you should find that Sony’s ProDisc file system (your XDCAM media’s format) is recognized and that your discs mount on the desktop when in FAM mode (File Access Mode) … but you’ll get annoying errors when trying to import footage, or maybe even recognizing the database if you previously had a higher version installed. So next you use the 2.11.0 installer to update your XDCAM apps etc to the latest version.

This works for me. I have no idea if its a method that will work for any host Mac system but its worked on every laptop I’ve tried. Am not sure either if it’s specifically version 2.5.1 that you need for the first install, I have a feeling it’ll be fine with anything up to 2.8 but that is just a hunch, not knowledge derived of actual testing.

As for your “Capture Now” issues via HD-SDI, these will not be due to your XDCAM Transfer app .. what I/O hardware are you capturing with, what codec are you capturing to, what Mac are you using, what media drives are you using for your capture scratch, and how full are those drives?

I always though the Drobo Pro/Elite held great potential for small edit operations, with the iSCSI connectivity good for nearly Firewire800 speeds. Have recommended it as such often, so its a real shame to hear such negative feedback.

You may want to check that the timeline window is the active window and that there is nothing selected in the timeline … indeed, try pressing Apple Shift A (Deselect All) and Option X (Clear In and Out) then try exporting again.

Maybe the Behringer BCF2000 would be enough for you, though I’ve heard past reports (that may be long out dated) that the motorized faders were a little noisy:

You might want to check this footage back on your camera or deck. Chances are that despite your best intentions you did actually record in SP mode (which is the default) … SP, as Rafa notes, is 25 Mbs CBR MPEG HD aka just plain old HDV video.

Sorry its not better news, but as you say “the footage looks great” so even though its not what you intended its still all good right?
