How long is a piece of string?

Until we know your budget and requirements, then any answers will be a bit general. I run a Blackmagic Multibridge Pro in my suite. It copes with everything I throw at it, more or less. Would I buy AJA? Yes. Matrox? Yes. If you’ve a few hundred bucks to spend, then Blackmagic looks likely. Few thousand? Get a Kona. Need H264 encoding? Matrox.

None of the ‘big 3’ are bad products now – it’s just a case of picking the most appropriate for your needs. You need to do some homework and identify what those are. If you don’t do that, expect some interesting answers here 😉

They are both good, get whichever one offers the best / most immediate local support should you ever need it. If you are in the US then thats probably AJA, if you;re in Europe or elsewhere then that mat be Blackmagic.

Other than that, as Jason notes, try to identify your needs more precisely and you should be able to better narrow your choices.

AJA replaced my Kona Lhe Wednesday for a very minor problem, that as it turned was the breakout cables fault, but could have just as easily been my problem. AJA has been STERLING as far as their support. I can easily say it is probably the best in the business! My 2 cents….

re the AJA European support, we have dedicated distributors with support engineers and swap out stock in UK, Germany, Italy, France, Benelux & Russia; so support and the 3-5 year advanced replacement warranty is handled effectively here.

Also there is a direct dealer line to our engineering group, so we like to feel that escalation support is also well covered in Europe and if we’re falling short I’d always like to know!

I recently did a complete system upgrade – hardware & software. Previously I had a Decklink Pro HD and so this time I did a lot of home work and considered the benefits of all cards against cost.

Most important to me was good quality up/down/cross conversion, plus dual SDI inputs and outputs, as I feed my HDCam and digi beta simultaneously. I also knew that I had some projects that were going to be RED 4K and the ability to work with 2K files being converted and displayed correctly on a 1920 x 1080 monitor was also very important.

So in the end the winner was Kona3. It actually did the best job on all those tasks and I also knew it would be only getting better with time as the AJA support and development is also impressive. As for cost, I value my time and the reputation for being able to handle anything at quality with speedy turnaround. So the Kona3 was not expensive given my expectation of many years of profitable trouble free work.
