you can channel 1 and 2 of a clip as a single item only if they are a stereo pair … select the tracks then use Modify > Stereo Pair command (Option-L) to pair them … now adjustments will affect both tracks of the clip simultaneously

if you don’t want to pair them, or they are multiple independent clips then you can make global adjustments to multiple clips or tracks by using the Modify > Levels command. First select all the clips/tracks you want to adjust then select Modify > Levels (or press Cmd-Option-L) to bring up the Gain Adjust dialog where you can make an absoulte or relative adjustment to all the selected clips.

if you want to record your VO as a browser clip, and not to the timeline, then use File > Log & Capture…
preferably, record your VO to tape first, then capture it to FCP in the usual way

otherwise, change your Device Control to Non Controllable device
hook up you mic to the camera, then in FCP press the Capture Now button and then talk … press the Escape key when you’re done
if you’re going to go this route then you don’t have a timecode referenced source (same as if you use the Voice Over tool directly in FCP, except this way you lose the benefit of voicing directly to picture)
it might be a good idea to record to tape on the camera whilst you’re capturing your vo … then at least you have a backup of the VO on tape in case of trouble

Did you ever resolve this problem? I just found myself in the exact same position …

I’ve been trying to do an 8 channel output, also to a Sony IMX vtr, and can’t get it to work.

If I choose 8 channel audio mapping in the Device Control preset, with RS222 control, then in my ETT window the destination track control popup for the audio tracks shows channel 4 as pre-enabled … and its also greyed out and can’t be modified.
Furthermore, regardless of ouput channel selection, FCP’s device control seems unable to control channels 5 to 8 on the recorder.
In FCP, if I select any output channels above channel 4, then all channel selections below 4 are ignored, and the recorder seems to receive a signal to enable channels 1 to 4 relative to my selections in FCP for channels 5-8.

All very strange. The actual output from the Decklink card is exactly as it should be with the output assignments correctly mapped to the output channels. The only immediate workaround I can find is to put the record deck next to the FCP and manualy override/enable the tracks to insert directly on the deck … it works but is far from ideal.

Any tips greatly appreciated. If anyone else would care to experiment, just create a device control preset with Audio mapping set to 8 channels and see if your ETT window will allow you to enable/disable channel 4.

weeeell, if you’ve already upgraded your license then you really shouldn’t be installing another copy using the same licence.
if you have FCE anyway and are working in DV then why not go that route. keep it legal.

if this is indeed your issue then Kurt is absolutely right
there is a nasty bug with overlays causing levels to shift, i’ve noticed it specifically with the range check overlay
simply turning it off fixed the problem for me

fwiw on closer inspection i found the level shift also happened on the computer monitor (but was far more pronouced on the external monitor)
