For the minor interface tweaks (naming tracks, resizable waveforms, custom text sizes etc) we’ll find out all this over the next few days. Often a quick trip through the User Preferences tabs can reveal a lot more of the lower level than a big splashy demo. Meaning, Apple are unlikely to have addressed such relatively unimportant enhancements when there were really major new features to trumpet …but fear not, our trusty NAB reporters will find out anything there is to discover.

As to the other more significant improvements that were oft requested, such as improved keyframe handling, multiple trim point capabilities, smart bins etc etc … well, yes, first impressions suggest that FCP itself has not seen many aggresive improvements at that level, as we might have expected a shopping list of these enhancements, but its still a little early to a draw conclusions.

And even if nothing new does surface, I’d still gladly take open format timelines and robust MM performance over the point release stuff any day of the week.

no doubt. however my question is with regards to preview/output when working with ProRes 422 timeline (without additional hardware) … or even moer specifically, when cutting XDCAM HD on a laptop 😉

any insights?

I guess i was wondering whether I might be able to drop mixed SD and HD formats (including HDV and/or XDCAM HD codecs) into a ProRes422 timeline, in order to make use of the HD 10 bit color space …. and yet get a relatime downconvert to DV out of firewire. Yes, it is entirely possible I have lost touch with reality at this point, I should have slept in a little longer.

I wonder how long it will take Matrox to support ProRes422 with their MXO box?

I for one am etremely pleased that this did not happen … of course, it may yet come to pass, but I hope not.

One of the strengths of Apple’s Final Cut software has been its refusal to over-adopt the tired approach. Any user has access to any feature, and is limited only by his own hardware.

Now, if Apple, using their proprietary knowledge of the software, were to engineer their own +5K hardware engine that would allow them to really blow the roof off with FCP, well then yes please!… and/or if they opened up their software to provide the hooks needed for third-party developers to develop such an engine …. or even just to add more hardware surface controls, then I’d welcome it wholeheartedly.

But please save us from the approach that would have kept “Color” for the Final Cut Studio Extreme hardware/software bundle users only.

its not rocket science.

if you need to deliver for both aspect ratios then you need to design your 16:9 version 4:3 safe, or create 2 separate versions each optimised for their respective aspect ratios

well bloody hell … I’m an “select all tracks forward tool” (tttt) guy too, and I don’t think I ever knew that the Shift key modified that behaviour with the “select track forward tool” (and visa versa)

basically, they should peak wherever the delivery specs tell you they should peak … you need to check with the broadcaster you are delivering to.

that said, if you are just creating your own master, for submission to multiple broadcasters, then my suggestion would be maximum peaks absolutely no higher than -6db

but I don’t edit music videos so my advice may be off … hang about, and I’m sure others will jump in with better targetted advice
