Andy “fwiw, you’re certainly not mad to expect it to just work … i have worked with multiple FCP/Blackmagic/A500P setups with FCP4.x and FCP5.x and there were never any SDI frame sync issues on capture or playout

FCP loads all those AU plugins … if you’re not going to use them, then you need some kind of plugin manager
quickest workaround is simply to create an alias to your audio plugs folder on the desktop, and create a second folder called disabled audio plugs. then just drag and drop between th e2 foilders to enable/disable

just line up the payhead to frame to which you have a known timecode, go to the Modify menu and choose Timecode, and type in the new timecode for that frame
but Jerry is right twofold
1) you cant just modify tiemcode by a known offset, you have to match frames as above
2) given that youre matching frames anyway, then you may as well just mark an in point on those frames and synchronize the multiclip on in points -
why not do exactly that? use a black to white graident, created in photoshop or similar. sandwich it between the two video tracks and then in the upper track, set the composite mode to “travel matte – luma”

I haven’t used Filemaker Pro as database for this, but have done it by coding a web-based front end with PHP and a MySQL backend. All worked fine. I guess what you choose depends mainly on your budget, and your familarity with coding. There are plenty of open source solutions that will allow you to deploy without licensing restrictions but will likely need you to do a lot of the grunt work.

the new (Mac) version of Sony’s XDCAM Transfer software (v2.0 expected October) is supposed to alllow multiple XDCAM devices to be mounted simultaneously … that should allow discs to be duplicated easily via file transfer.
this fucntion may already be acheivable using the PC version of the software, which is has been in development a lot longer. i’m not too familiar with that version though.

digibeta is indeed a 10bit format, it’s basic HDCAM thats 8bit, i got myself confused there!

as it seems you are stuck then you might want to modify your immediate target to something more immediately acheivable. Did you test yet to see if things work any better with an uncompressed 8-bit or maybe ProRes timeline?
i’m guessing I lost something in the translation but the overall workflow does seem a little convoluted given your target. You’re working in a standard definition uncompressed 10-bit timeline, in order to then play out to an 8 bit SD recording medium, so that you can then up-res to an HD format for eventual film out …. ouch.
out of memory errors can be caused by a bunch of stuff, you probably already did your homework on this, but check yu have no CMYK images in there, and make sure the stills are not of a resolution that exceeds your targeted SD resolution needs

how full is your system disc? if the startup disc is overfull you will see increased load times with everything … but particulaly noticable with applications that need to laod a lot of resources, such as FCP.
try also targeting/limiting your “Search Folder”‘s in FCP’s System Settings window. that may reduce the search time, as suggested by David
