  • FCP 6.0 and loading from a Sony BVW-A500

We just upgraded to FCP 6.0/Studio 2 using a Black Magic Design Decklink Extreme SDI card. We load about 99% of our footage, mostly film transfers, from one of our Sony BVW-A500s. Anytime we capture footage with sync sound, the sound is ALWAYS four frames off. Can anyone give us any advice? I called Apple “Support” and was told that the BVW-A500 wasn’t on Apple’s approved device list! In fact, the kid at Apple basically treated me like a moron for wasting his time in asking why something not on the “approved list” wasn’t working as expected. Please be honest. Am I THAT much of a moron? Is a Sony BVW-A500 digital BetaCam really so old and wretched that FCP 6.0 will control EVERY aspect of it perfectly right down to capturing each and every frame of timecode perfectly, but the sound is always four frames off because it’s not on Apple’s list of qualified devices?

WARNING: I’m about to show my age as the balance of this post is a rant and-a-half! I have 26 years of experience in online editing. I’ve always changed with the times and embraced newer, better technology. I mean, who wants to go back to the days of locking up seven machines and/or dealing with SCH phase shifts? What I hate about today’s world of technology is that no one seems willing or able to give a straight answer if you own anything except what their company makes. In the Olde Days an online room was made up of gear from many different manufacturers, but all the tech people KNEW how their box worked with all of the other boxes whether their company manufactured it or not. It was just good business to make sure you knew how your product would best be integrated into a given system. Today it’s just, “Sorry sir, it’s not on out approved list. You might want to call Sony to check and see if they’ve made any adjustments to THEIR software so your machine will work with Apple’s FCP 6.0”.

BTW, I have tried adjusting the frame offset setting in one of the menus, but it only changes the audio/video sync relationship of the playback in the canvas window rather than the SDI output.

    hi Mark

are you able to confirm this with multile A500 decks? have you tried resetting the deck to its factory defaults, and then testing again?

    cheers
    Andy

fwiw, you’re certainly not mad to expect it to just work … i have worked with multiple FCP/Blackmagic/A500P setups with FCP4.x and FCP5.x and there were never any SDI frame sync issues on capture or playout

Is it possible that the captured media is in fact in sync, but that your playback setup is somehow creating an offset effect?

If you play a digitized clip directly off your RAID in Quicktime using Mac audio output [not through the card], does it play in sync or not?

If it plays in sync, then the playback routing or setting of the system or FCP would be to blame. I am not an expert installer by any means, and my setups are all AJA, so take my 2
