Very long FCP start time…

This often happens when FCP is looking for files that have gone offline, as it searches every drive for the missing files. If this is indeed what has happened, you should figure out a way to minimize the search. One way is use Media Manager to copy all of the important stuff from your project to a new project. If you’re uncomfortable with MM then you’ll have to figure out other ways to do the same type of thing. For example, deleting all offline files in the FCP browser that you no longer need would be another way to possibly fix the problem.

how full is your system disc? if the startup disc is overfull you will see increased load times with everything … but particulaly noticable with applications that need to laod a lot of resources, such as FCP.

try also targeting/limiting your “Search Folder”‘s in FCP’s System Settings window. that may reduce the search time, as suggested by David

Is this a certain project or every project?

Also try deleting your Thumbnail Cache and the Waveform Cache folders. This will speed things along for sure. I have done this a lot in the past on different client’s computers that don’t start FCP very fast and it works! Make sure not to delete the Autosaves too, just the two cache folders.

Thanks Guys. Yes, it does this even when starting up with a new project (I had deleted the preferences). So I don’t think it’s looking for lost media. The system drive is about 70% full (this is my laptop system, which I try to keep lean and mean, but more full than I’d like). I’ll try emptying the caches.
