If you feel the need to transcode your XDCAM EX source footage to ProRes then you might want to hazzard a look at FCP X … that all new NLE will optionally transcode your EX footage to ProRes and/or ProRes Proxy on import of the (transferred) material.

Otherwise you could look at a third party app like Imagine’s ProxyMill, which will transcode your EX footage to ProRes on transfer:

If you are wanting that functionality built in to FCP 7 … well the product is EOL, highly unlikely that Sony will see any value in developing such functionality for legacy apps.

In the Sony ClipBrowser

Sounds like you might actually be using the wrong application Hal. You mention “Sony ClipBrowser” but you should be using a much newer but similarly named app called “XDCAM Browser” (currently at version 1.3).

There’s good reason for the confusion, not least of all the name … there have been a number of apps in the past which have been all rolled in to this one new app:

“XDCAM Browser combines some of the functionalities provided by the following separate software applications into a single cross platform (Windows and Mac OS) application: PDZ-1 XDCAM Proxy Browser, PDZ-VX10 Sony XDCAM Viewer, XDCAM Proxy Viewer, XDCAM Transfer for Final Cut Pro, and XDCAM EX ClipBrowser. Version 1.00 of XDCAM Browser supports many of the most popular features of these separate applications. The separate applications will eventually be phased out as more of their major features are ported over to XDCAM Browser.”

Personally, I still prefer Sony XDCAM Transfer (PDZK-P1) a really nice native Mac utility designed for log and transfer of Sony XDCAM media. Last version was 2.12.0. Apparently there’s one more version coming down the line, but then its gone. A little more info here:

Absolutely, though bear in mind that, strictly speaking, your FCP 7 license covers only one simultaneous primary (desktop) and secondary (laptop) install … as long as you are within that limitation you’re good (not that Apple have left anyone a chance anymore of pursuing a legal alternative for multiple CT installs).

Yes and no … on the whole, the effects you see inside FCP X are “Motion Templates” and can be considered as just a subset of those effects and effect combinations available in Motion 5. It’s simple enough, you just right click an effect in your FCP X Effects Browser and choose “Open a copy in Motion” … the effect template then opens as a Motion project in Motion 5 which you can then adapt to your needs.

Aha …. don’t drag and drop from XDCAM Browser. Instead, right click the clip you want and choose the “Register for Final Cut Pro” option. This re-wraps the .mp4s or .mxfs as Quicktime Movies for use in FCP.

You might want to consider creating your own Effects and Presets “Project” and then storing those effects for later use in there. Not as convenient as having your custom effect build available in the Effects Browser (for that you’d need to build your effect directly in Motion 5 and then publish it to FCP X) but may be a workable solution.

There are plenty of methods: double clicking the audio waveform area of the clips that you want to transition between (to expand them) and then applying the transition to the video only would seem to be the simplest option; another one would be simply to “build” the transition rather than applying it as a canned effect: for example, add a “Whites” generator (from Generators > Solids) as a connected clip above the cut, trim it to the desired transition length and then keyframe it’s Opacity. Copy and paste wherever else its needed.
