  • Best way to add dip to white transitions in interview without affecting the audio?

Posted by Benjamin Reichman on August 29, 2011 at 8:05 pm

I’m trying to sort through the threads here on this subject, but I’m under some deadline pressure and am trying to make sure I understand what’s best.

So, in a long interview without b roll, I need to use the dip to white transition (Fade to Color) to cover some cuts. But I want the dip to be video-only, and not affect the audio.

How can I do that? I could make the audio a separate storyline, but surely that’s not needed, right? How can I apply video-only dissolves?

I’m sure there’s a better way, but I’ve been selecting the clips, right clicking on “Expand audio and Video” then when you add a transition it only affects video.

It shouldn’t effect the audio at all. Humm. Double check that in preferences under Edit that it says Apply Transitions using “Available Media” opposed to “full overlap”.

The later is used for…. well i don’t know when but it is the default.

    Hi Benjamin
There are plenty of methods: double clicking the audio waveform area of the clips that you want to transition between (to expand them) and then applying the transition to the video only would seem to be the simplest option; another one would be simply to “build” the transition rather than applying it as a canned effect: for example, add a “Whites” generator (from Generators > Solids) as a connected clip above the cut, trim it to the desired transition length and then keyframe it’s Opacity. Copy and paste wherever else its needed.
    Hope it helps

Thank you all for the tips! Once I double-clicked to expand the audio and turned off the “Full Overlap” setting, all was well.
