Odd that the FCP Designer would post a “streaming” video that doesn’t stream (it appears to be a progressive download) I’m downloading to my desktop to review as the streaming doesn’t work well -kind of like FCP X

Not surprising – most of our network clients have now abandoned FCP for AVID (we have to deliver programs in an AVID timeline and Autoduck and Boris Transfer are unfortunately hit or miss)

These broadcast clients because need to produce programs today not some time in the future when Apple gets around to bringing the latest version of FCPX up to par with what they had less than 6 months ago.

Yes they know the argument “but FCP 7 still works” Unfortunately something along the way will break it (Lion software update to come?) – there’s no development or support for new formats…and Premiere and Avid can now do real time with no transcode on so many more formats. That seems to be the only thing going for Final Cut X…

It would be great if all the terrific plug in companies would port their fine work to AVID and Premiere.

What on earth was Apple thinking?

Great – has anyone actually tried this backward compatibility? I’m downloading a trial of 6 and will report if it actually works – Thanks

  • Ok – thanks for the tip – now please tell us how to do that in FCP too!

Shane – outstanding as always – As a FCP7 (is there anyone making a living seriously using FCP X?) refugee used to hundreds of easy to apply plugins it’s nice to know it’s easy to roll your own

(Hey FCP 7 Plugin makers — there’s a big new market out here – convert those FX Factory and Natress plugins to AVID – we’ll buy them!)

au contraire! As President Obama said in the last election – Yes We Can.

Go to timeline fast menu (hamburger menu) — chose SHOW TRACK — and UNCLICK TC

Timecode along the bottom of your timeline disappears.

(I only found this out by teaching myself AVID.. I am yet another FCP refugee fleeing the dumbing down of Final Cut X) In fact you can see several ways to make your AVID environment more “Final Cut” like in this nice youtube tutorial

can’t you just turn on the automation gain control on the audio mixer…hit record and then ride the levels in real time to record the audio keyframes while the timeline is playing?

  • I share your frustration but you may be surprised that the problem is with AVID – not you.

Came across a tiny note in he upgrade notes to MC 5.5.3 which says something to the effect: “Fixes problem where AVID MC 5.5.2 didn’t recognize or relink Automatic Duck AMA Files.”

WTF??? I think – so I try again – and low and behold my formally unconnected sequence suddenly works with MC 5.5.3 – so first try that.

But here’s something else I did.

AVID doesn’t seem to like XDCAM HD via AMA and Auto Duck – just can’t get the reconnect.

So I tried transcoding the sequence to AVID’s native quicklime DNxHD in FCP before doing the auto duck

And it all came in perfectly

so that may be another option.
