Loaded the beta drivers about two weeks ago. Had a few quirks with the jog wheel not working after a software update from Apple. Repaired permissions and rebooted. The keyboard seems to be working fine for now. I have not really taxed it hard with a big online editing session as I’m shooting a couple of projects right now. But overall it seems to be working fine for me. Glad to have the bella keyboard back after the tiger upgrade.

I don’t think it is a OS issue. I have a Lacie 500gig firewire drive that keeps unmounting ever since installing Tiger. Although this happened a lot even under 10.3.8 & 10.3.9, this is sad to see happening under Tiger again. I think there is a major Firewire issue with certain G5’s and especially with Lacie drives!!

I also attempted sending a small amount of audio only, but it still referenced the whole sequence of audio when you saved. So it was just as slow.

One issue with this project that might be the problem, is it is one long capture, even though my timeline is sliced up at every edit. We have already locked picutre on this doc, so I just recaptured the video and audio from a Digi-beta Master. I even went as far as slicing up my timline and putting audio on different tracks. As this might be the problem, you would still think STP would allow for a single audio track to be exported from FCP without referring to the whole base layer clip. It is starting to make some sense to me why this takes so long to save, but you would think if you just wanted one 10 second clip sent to STP, it wouldn’t care about the remaining timeline. I thought in one of my tests, I clicked on a clip and told it to be an independent clip. You would think FCP saw that as a single clip without reference to the long base clip….but that did not work in STP either.

I’m going to assemble another quick project with lots of clips from different tapes and see if it does the same thing.

Thanks for your input. As usual these type of errors turn out to be operator error. Hopefully with a little more testing, I’ll wrap my mind around how this is supposed to work in Apple’s mind.

Thanks for chiming in. I used the new menu in FCP to export from the FCP 5 time line, by right clicking on my clip, choose send to Multi-track. What shows up in STP is my various clips as it should be.

Do you find the save feature takes a long time to resave your work? I’m working on a 60 minute project and it would take almost 10 minutes to resave the changes I applied to the audio in STP.

When I send a single clip from FCP 5, STP references the whole FCP sequence. If I am just working on a 10 second audio clip for effects, it takes a minute or two to save the effects as it is referencing the whole sequence back in FCP.

I gave up on STP and have to export my audio (make a QT movie) single clip by single clip. This not only doubles my work, but it also takes up a lot of hard drive space.

I am not alone in my issues with STP. If you browse the Apple STP discussion, you will see other people are having the same issues I am.

I would like to talk you more about your success as this would be a big time saver if I am not going through the right steps. Could you give some examples of the work you are doing to make this work.

Have you been able to make FCP 5 to Sound Track Pro multi-track exports actually work?

Been there too Bob with my Sonnet 4X4 card. I spent hours with a spread sheet checking different configs, just to get all my drives to mount. All I really had to do was hit the SATA cables in harder with a sledge hammer…just kidding. You really have to shove them in so hard to make sure the connection is right though. Once I had a firm connection with all the cables, all my drives showed up.

BTW, did you get good speed results using the 8 drive config? Is it trully fast enough for HD work? Sure seems like a price saver compared to a full blown X-Raid.

Cool. Thanks for the update. I was just getting ready to send them an email tomorrow as I bought the keyboard a week before the Tiger upgrade, only to lose the functionality after the upgrade.

Hope this software update works better then Tiger and FCP Production bundle 🙂

Working in DVCPRO HD should not be a problem at all with your drives. You would have to capture the footage via firewire from a AJHD-1200a deck into your G5.

If someone is going to capture the footage for you on a Kona2 or Decklink card to some media drives, then you can edit it. But the IO is not meant for HD. Just Standard def flavors of 8 bit and 10 bit. I have one DVCPRO HD project that I can actually see through my IO. All be it single frames at a time. When I set the IO as my output, I see the DVCPRO HD footage refresh on my SD monitor in letter box form.

If you want to work in HD without restrictions, I would recomend you get a Kona 2.

Walter, thanks for the reply. I thought there had to be some cache I could trash. Hmmmmm, maybe I’ll make that my signature line in future posts 🙂 I was wondering if this was something to do with my recent upgrade to FCP 5. I even went as far as reloading a virgin copy of the project from before my upgrade to Tiger and FCP 5. Same issue.

I often wondered if the Thumbnails were taxing the system. I have had the occasional hic-up with RT and long projects. I’l give it a shot tomorrow.
