Thanks for the input Charles. I ended up with the complete suite as I needed some of the other options in Squeeze additional to Flash.

There was a thread on the Apple discussion list a week or so ago regarding the sluggish behavior of motion…spinning beach balls, no keyboard response, etc. The solution was to uninstall Quicktime and re-install the Quicktime package again. Some of the responses on the thread said it fixes their system. I have been knee deep in a project and do not want to risk having a QuickTime melt down with the un-install / re-install, although it might be a simple fix, I just don’t want to chance it with 4 projects on my drives. Once they are done in the next two weeks, I’ll back up my files and then do the QT replacement.

This is called blocked relaying of email. Most ISP providers block port 25 if you are not on their service with an account. Say you want to use .Mac account on a Cox internet service. You make your email and press send. .Mac uses port 25 to send and is rejected by Cox’s servers. To get around this you need to change your email account prefs to port 581…..I’m not on my mac right now, but that could be 585. you can search the Apple email dicsussion lists and there is a ton of messages to getting around the port blocking.
The other thing you can do, is log into the .Mac web interface and send your email from there. It uses Apple servers that do not block your email. If you are using your own web mail program, see if they have an online version you can post or email from.

Been running a 4+4 for almost a year. First under 10.3.9 and now under tiger and 10.4.2 Works like a champ, except for the occasional boot up issue. Just have to start the drives up a little longer, then the G5. Only have external hooked up right now with 4 X 300gig Maxtor 16mb cache drives in a Burly box. Been hammering away on a behind the scenes for a feature film coming out and the card handles the 800 gigs of uncompressed files just fine. Wish I had known about the 8 port external card, but you have to go with what is available at the time.

Is this the Kona2 or older Kona card? The older Kona card is not going to work. Did you set up your Control panel properly? You might have some cross over problems if you do not have the right channels selected.

I’d say he is just lucky 🙂 Is he running Tiger 10.4.2 or 10.3.9?

STP requires Apple’s core audio coding. The IO is not core audio compliant for STP. I asked AJA about this when STP first came out and this was the answer I got. Maybe if they recode the IO software it might work, but I would not hold out for that to happen. To many new products to come from AJA and the IO will stay as is. The Kona2 card is core audio compliant, so you could use that instead with STP.

I remember the NAB demo artist using a midi input to create certain looks. Guess I’m SOL on this as I have a deadline next week to complete my animation. After Effects, here I come.

If you are just doing tests for your grahics, try the timecode read filter in fcp. Export your movie with that applied. Tweak everything you need in motion with the timecode burned in. Once you have everything you need, replace the original media in your motion project with out the time code reader filter applied.Seems like a lot of steps, but at least you will be able to see the original time codes.

Check out http://www.macgurus.com
They have all the SATA cases and cards you might want to use. Built my own 1.2TB SATA box and works like a champ. It might not be fast enough for full blown HD, but it works fine with DVCPRO HD. Plus it is more reliable then the 3 failing Lacie Firewire 800 drives I bought over a year ago.
