If you are in LA, contact Alpha Dogs and have them digitize the footage for you.

December 16, 2007 at 7:43 pm in reply to: FCP 6.02 VERY VERY VERY BUGGY

Are the exporting problems the same as the pdf report you sent out a few weeks back?

Are these long exports when you have to re-compress all frames? Or are you doing the short cut way you did in 6.01?

Man this is not good news as we are upgrading a ton of machines tomorrow to 6.02!!

October 23, 2007 at 1:30 pm in reply to: DVCPRO HD export issues

    Regarding the av file extension:
I’ve only seen the export turn the QT file into a file with the .exe extension. OSX see’s it as a Unix file. You can rename it it with .mov and it should be fine or re-export as below.

    Regarding the export Frame size:

This is a known DVCPRO HD bug in FCP 6.01. Make sure you export your file by checking “recompress frames”. This will then take about 3X realtime for your file to export, but the frame size will be correct.

August 2, 2007 at 6:25 am in reply to: Any FCP users have experience with VelocityHD?

    Sam,

Sold my DPS system over 4 years ago and moved to FCP. The writing with Leitch/Harris has been on the wall for a couple of years now. They are a great company, but how long can you stay with a end of life product like Velocity and survive. Real-time features or not, your board could go down and your stuck making a move when you least expect it. Sorry to hear your Q was EOL’d 2 weeks after you bought it. But I’m sure you have made your money back by now 🙂

If you can, try to find someone in your area that has a MacPro with AJA Kona 3 hardware and fast raid (important point to making the system truly HD capable.) Take some project elements you built on your Velocity system and put FCP through a test.

I saw your post in the other forum discussing Adobe CS3 suite with Lyn and Matrox Axio. Another viable option if your comfortable on the PC side and want to edit on Premiere. I was on a Matrox system before going to DPS. Got burned by Matrox and have never given their products another look. Axio might be a great product “now”, but I have not regretted going with Final Cut.

Don’t forget, the same Adobe package is ported over to the mac now as well. You do have the option of running Bootcamp on a mac to take advantage of XP based programs if you want…..software wise.

If you do spec out a mac, see about getting the ATI Radeon X1900 XT vs the Nvidia card. Save some money on the ATI card and buy more ram or hard drive space. Seems Color works better with the ATI card. At least that was my impression from some of the folks at NAB and online.

And regarding your HD camera options…..good luck 🙂 The waters in that arena are just as muddy. So many formats, so many choices to consider, what will be the quickest return on investment. Or satisfy your client needs the most.

Go out and get some system demos and come back with questions.

    Good luck with your transition.

Why not jump over to the cow compression forum and ask there. Lots of your answers are in the archives if you set your view back 3 months.

If you have to go back to a prior 6.0.1 project, you might have some projects in the auto save vault you might be able to re-open without the corruption.

June 28, 2007 at 7:08 pm in reply to: Beta SP tape age

I worked on a documentary that had shot Betacam tapes from 1983. They sat in storage for over 15. When we dubbed the tapes to Digi-Beta for safe keeping, we did not have a single problem. But when we needed to grab additional footage not included in the Digi-Beta run, we snapped a few of the master Betacam tapes. The deck we were using in the edit suite (BVW-75) got pretty gunked up from the old tape particles. So watch out for clogging errors if you use those old tapes over and over.
