Hi Chris,
there is a free tool that let’s you do exactly that: It’s called SoundFlower by Cycling74. It let’s you route audio from one application to another. Basically in the application you want to record from you select the SoundFlower Output and on the application you want to record to (FCP) you select the SoundFlower Input as source,
The app is for free and works great although I haven’t personally used it with FCP yet but with plenty of other apps (Logic Pro etc.).
Documentation and download are here: https://cycling74.com/products/soundflower/
Good luck,
André

June 15, 2011 at 11:03 am in reply to: MAC OS X Snow leopard cannot be installed on this computerHi Jessica,
it sounds like you’re trying to use the original install disk that was supplied with a new Mac. Unfortunately those will only run on the exact model they were supplied with and not “similar” models. The reasons for that are plentiful but it comes down to the fact that if you want to run a Disk Utility check from the DVD you’ll have to use the specific CD that came with that model of Mac computer.
An original Snow Leopard OS X Install DVD will work but not one that came bundled with another type of Mac.
You can also run a disk utility check without any kind of DVD by booting into single user mode and running the fsck command.
This article from Apple has all the info:

Good luck!

Hi Vincent,
in 90% of the cases, no. You’ll be just fine. However there are some safer options:
1) Create one user account just for editing, work etc. and one just for gaming, misc. stuff.
or even better
2) Create a whole new partition for editing, work etc. and another one for non-work, gaming etc.
or best
3) Create a new partition with Mac OS X on an external or separate drive for non-work stuff. The advantage of having your work/non work separate from each other is that it makes it easier to back up your important data, troubleshoot and keep background processes to a bare minimum.
Hope that helps,
André

Hi Laura,
the 5 minute version of how to achieve this is to download and use this plugin with the app of your choice:

Trash the cache for good measure too but also and definitely the render files FCP created, if you’re lucky that will already fix it.
If not, Michael’s method is great to eliminate the offending clip or graphic.
You can also duplicate the FCP project file in the Finder until you have eliminated the problem (just to be on the safe side, when I run into issues I create an exact duplicate copy of everything I’m working on and then try to nail the problem down, then fix it in the original and discard the duplicate but that’s just my silliness).
Autosave and undo is all good, I just know that a lot of people have it still set at the standard FCP settings which can cause a lot of frustration.
Crossing my fingers for you!

Hi John,
I remember having this issue once because of a single corrupted graphics file and in another case because of a corrupted video. The only way I was able to find the culprit out of the 300 or so clips I had in the project was by adding them one after the other and trying to export.
I’ve also had success fixing this problem once by trashing all my render files and creating a duplicate sequence to work from.
Increase the auto save interval, max. undo’s etc. and start eliminating. It’s painful and time-intensive but as far as I’m aware the only way to get to a corrupted clip.
Maybe someone out there knows of a tool that can batch check the integrity of clips and graphics though?
Good luck!

Hi Jurriaan,
the Shure X2u should work just fine with Snow Leopard! In the VO tool’s source drop-down menu just select the “Shure Digital” input and you’re all set.
As far as quality is concerned I doubt you will hear much of a difference for voiceovers, so you should be fine.
Good luck!

June 7, 2011 at 6:50 pm in reply to: How much space must I leave open on an external HD?Hi Noam,
one thing that comes into play when considering how much space should be left free is depending on how big the data chunks you dump onto the drive will be.
If you have only a lot of smaller file chunks on the HD (say up to 100MB-300MB) and you still have several GB free then the chances that a file of the same size will become fragmented is small, however if you have lots of big files on the HD and you throw on more big files then there’s a very good chance they will be fragmented slowing down read/write operations.
Hope that makes sense!
