MJPEG w/the quality slider setup to Best/100% will give you 4:4:4 but no alpha channel.

You need to be working with an actual broadcast monitor because using a computer monitor hooked up to your GFX card is inaccurate a number of different levels (as you’ve experienced).
For other Color related Q’s I’d suggest posting them in Apple Color section here on the COW instead of in the FCP section.

The majority of people still watch SD DVDs on SD TVs so de-interlacing just introduces another loss of quality as you will go from interlaced source footage-> de-interlaced DVD -> interlaced SD TV. If you know your audience is going to primarily watch the DVD on a progressive display than doing a top quality de-interlace should be a consideration but doing it across the board is a waste of resources and an unnecessary degradation of image quality, IMO.

AFAIK no I/O equipment will handle 480p as it’s a not a standard format. That’s why we use the scan converter to take the 480p and convert it into something broadcast equipment will like (in our case 720p). The down side is the scan converter we use (Barco Image Pro HD) is around $8k. There might be cheaper options out there, but this is the only one I’ve used.

The Wii is a pain in the butt to capture from because it strays from broadcast standards (and capturing in DV doesn’t help out the situation either). We send 16×9 480p out of Wii into a scan converter that embeds that 480p signal into a 720p signal (we don’t up convert so it’s a 16×9 image in the middle w/black borders on all four sides), capture in 720p and then edit in a custom DV50 16×9, progressive timeline. When we resize the 720p footage to 100% it fills up the 16×9 SD frame (well, almost fills up the frame) and having it progressive instead of interlaced makes a world of difference in terms of quality.
If your footage is going to be played back on a TV then your only option is to zoom in. If it’s for the web you can edit w/the black bars in FCP and just crop them off w/Compressor (or whatever program you use to compress for the web).

My experience w/Digital Foundry’s gear has been less than impressive. We’ve used laptop and small form factor PCs from them and are still looking for something to meet our needs. We use DF for a lot of mobile/on location capture and maybe the units would provide a better experience if they weren’t used in this type of on-the-go fashion.

The codecs aren’t intel specific as we have a bunch of G5s working w/XDCAM EX footage. It sounds like the install may have gone bad somewhere along the way. If you have the time I’d do another clean install but be more systematic about it (assuming you weren’t like this before). I’d install the OS, then do all the updates for the OS. Then I’d instal FCS, repair permissions, reboot and update FCS. Repair permissions, reboot, and download the Sony xfer utility. Install, repair permissions, reboot.

I think 4 or 5 “basic” votes should be enough to send it to the basic forum. I also agree that we should try and spend some more time in the basic forum so that questions there get answered in a timely fashion.
