Long story short part 1, Apple has huge problems properly and consistently handling gamma.
Long story short part 2, FCP always applies a gamma ‘correction’ in the Viewer and Canvas windows regardless of how you have your monitor calibrated. That is one of a few reasons why you never trust what you see inside FCP and have to use an external monitor.

I believe by doing this you are down converting the signal coming out of the camera to DV instead of sending out HDV. This would explain why the DVCPro HD Easy Setup allows you to control the camera because DV and DVCPro HD use the same deck control protocol.

I’ve got the same deck at work and I was able to get everything working fine w/my FCP (6.0.4) and Mac Pro (2.93GHz 8-core). Just to cover all the bases, do you have External Video turned on in FCP? And, are you using the ‘regular’ DV-NTSC Easy Setup for everything (as opposed to the AJA/Kona DV setup… assuming there is one)? I have a Blackmagic card and it has a Blackmagic DV NTSC setup option. If I choose that Easy Setup I can’t monitor video via the deck because the video is being sent out of the Blackmagic card and not out via FW. Also, make sure the deck is in DV mode and not Auto because Auto can be finicky.

Experience is one of the things that sets apart the professional from everyone else. It’s like sitting behind the controls of a jumbo jet and going “Man, why is everything so confusing?” To a professional pilot the controls aren’t confusing because through training and experience they’ve learned how to fly the plane and how to read the instruments. Editing is basically no different. Professional editors spend decades learning about the art and craft of editing so it shouldn’t be surprising for someone who is inexperienced to feel in over their heads at times. Especially these days where everything is changing so fast.

Just wanted to chime in that I would be very interested in this software as well. Avid’s Script Sync is a big reason I’m probably going to pick up a copy of Avid MC.
