Sony HDV Deck – MiniDV Footage = No External Video
Guys, searched the forum for more info on getting external video to work with this deck and DV. I have the deck set to DV and everything is hooked up correctly. This is DV footage with a Sony HDV deck.
I drilled down to the menu’s E – E setting, changed it and that did not help. I checked all settings in the FCP View menu and were all enabled. This is going straight FireWire into the MacPro. We did get picture and sound in Log and Capture, but we can’t get the Canvas output to show on the external video monitor (a flat panel samsung). We are connected via component out of the deck.
We also have an AJA Io, but it is not hooked up yet. Future plan is to route the deck to the Io via component. Don’t think hooking it up will be an issue once we get external video working through this deck for DV.

What model deck are you using and If you play DV footage back in the deck does it show up on the monitor?

Thanks for answering. I finally found out the deck is a HVR-M15AU.
To answer your question: Yes, when we playback footage it shows up in the monitor, just no external video from the timeline.Thanks so much!

I’ve got the same deck at work and I was able to get everything working fine w/my FCP (6.0.4) and Mac Pro (2.93GHz 8-core). Just to cover all the bases, do you have External Video turned on in FCP? And, are you using the ‘regular’ DV-NTSC Easy Setup for everything (as opposed to the AJA/Kona DV setup… assuming there is one)? I have a Blackmagic card and it has a Blackmagic DV NTSC setup option. If I choose that Easy Setup I can’t monitor video via the deck because the video is being sent out of the Blackmagic card and not out via FW. Also, make sure the deck is in DV mode and not Auto because Auto can be finicky.

We are still out of luck. Tried everything. Seems like EE is not working.

Bummer. I don’t suppose you have access to another DV deck or DV camera to test w/the system do you?
