Activity Forums Apple Final Cut Pro Legacy XDCAM codecs

    Hi,
I’m an editor and I’ve just started a new project in a Mac OS X 10.4.11.
When I got here, the computer had had a problem (I’m not sure which) and was just fixed. Someone installed Mac OS X and I installed Final Cut Studio 2 and downloaded all the updates available.
I was told that, before that crash, Final Cut (it was version 6.0. something) worked perfectly with XDCAM (HD 422) clips. But now, I try to open the same clips on Final Cut and on Quicktime and what I get is a black frame with audio. The audio is playing fine, but no video.
I’ve been looking for answers on the web for 2 days now and I think I’ve got it: somehow, some codecs went missing during the installation process.

I reinstalled XDCAM Transfer (version 2.10), Final Cut (version 6.0.6 – I don’t know which version was used before, but I’m sure it was something between 6 and 6.0.6) and Quicktime player (7.6.4). And repaired permissions.

When XDCAM Transfer opens, it claims that the following codecs are missing:
    XDCAM EX (VBR) Codecs
    XDCAM HD422 Codecs

I don’t know where to get those. I have a Mac OS X 10.5.8 at home and a Final Cut 6.0.6, and I’ve worked with XDCAM media on it, so maybe I have on my computer the missing codecs.

I’ve searched my QuickTime Library for codecs and here is the list:

    AC3MovieImport.component

    AppleHDVCodec.component

    AppleIntermediateCodec.component

    AppleMPEG2Codec.component

    AppleProRes422.component

    AvidAV1xCodec.component

    AvidAVDJCodec.component

    AvidAVdvCodec.component

    AvidAVUICodec.component

    DesktopVideoOut.component

    DivX Decoder.component

    DivX Encoder.component

    DVCPROHDCodec.component

    DVCPROHDMuxer.component

    DVCPROHDVideoDigitizer.component

    DVCPROHDVideoOutput.component

    DVCPROHDVideoOutputClock.component

    DVCPROHDVideoOutputCodec.component

    FCP Uncompressed 422.component

    Flip4Mac WMV Advanced.component

    Flip4Mac WMV Export.component

    Flip4Mac WMV Import.component

    Google Camera Adapter 0.component

    Google Camera Adapter 1.component

    IMXCodec.component

    LiveType.component

    Motion.component

    Perian.component

Can any of these be useful to the other computer?
    Thank you very much!

If I’m not mistaken the problem is sony did not release
those xdcam codecs your missing on G5 hardware.

it’s in the intel only release I’m pretty sure.

    Hi Cris,
    thanks for your answer.
Yes, I read somewhere that the XDCAM EX Clip Browser only works for Intel-based macs.
But someone who worked on this mac before me says these XDCAM clips used to work fine, and that he only used XDCAM Transfer because XDCAM EX Clip Browser would never open. So, I think that’s not the issue…

    Any other ideas?
    Thanks a lot!

The codecs aren’t intel specific as we have a bunch of G5s working w/XDCAM EX footage. It sounds like the install may have gone bad somewhere along the way. If you have the time I’d do another clean install but be more systematic about it (assuming you weren’t like this before). I’d install the OS, then do all the updates for the OS. Then I’d instal FCS, repair permissions, reboot and update FCS. Repair permissions, reboot, and download the Sony xfer utility. Install, repair permissions, reboot.

    Hi larisa,
You are still in Tiger (10.0.4).
Install Leopard and FC 6.0.2 or newer.
No problem to run all that in a G5.

    Rafael and Andrew,
    thank you!
I’ll try to follow Andrew’s steps.
Rafael, I can’t install Leopard because we don’t have the installation dvd.
Is there any legal way of downloading the installer for free?

But I don’t think that’s the problem. Leopard was never installed on this mac, only Tiger, and XDCAM media used to work well.
I’m suspecting it’s because of Final Cut.
When I open XDCAM transfer, it tells me 2 codecs are missing and that the “support for these codecs was introduced in Final Cut Pro 6.0.3” (for XDCAM HD422 Codecs) and “… Final Cut Pro 6.0.2” (for XDCAM EX (VBR) Codecs).
After I installed Final Cut Studio, I ran the automatic updates and Final Cut went from version 6 to 6.0.5 and then to 6.0.6.
Since the codec I need is XDCAM HD422, which was introduced in Final Cut Pro 6.0.3 according to XDCAM transfer, I thought that maybe I should reinstall Final Cut 6 and then update it litte by little, first Final Cut Pro 6.0.1, then Final Cut Pro 6.0.2, etc etc. so that it will install these codecs properly.

BUT I don’t have the receipts for these versions in this mac, so I figured I could copy them from my personal mac. Does this make sense to you guys?

    Thanks a lot.

P.S.: just to let you know that I copied the contents from my computer’s Quicktime Library to this one and it didn’t work…

    Hi Larissa,
Good to hear that was not a “Tiger” issue.

[Larissa Munck] “BUT I don’t have the receipts for these versions in this mac, so I figured I could copy them from my personal mac. Does this make sense to you guys? “
    No sure.
The receipts are documents just keep track of the installed updates.
If you want to reinstall something, you may need to delete the receipts.
If the installer find the receipts, will think that the software is already installed and won’t install again.

WHAT YOU NEED is the “Pro Applications Update 2008-05” (may be the one before too).
These are the updates from FC 6.0.2 up.

Yeah, receipts are just receipts, of course, I don’t know what I was thinking 😉

So, I tried to download Pro Applications Update 2008-01, which contains Final Cut Pro 6.0.3 update and is available here: https://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/application_updates/proapplicationsupdate200801.html.
Although we have a legal copy of final Cut Pro, I tried registering it on Apple website to be able to download the update, but it says that our SN is not valid! So, I’m trapped. Is there anywhere alse I can download Pro Applications Update 2008-01?

    Thanks!

    Hi larissa,
If I’m not wrong, you can jump directly to the Pro Applications 2008-05.
That would takes you directly to FC 6.0.5 or so.
    Cheers,

Almost one year later, and i finally solved the problem…
I reinstalled everything, followed all the tips you guys gave me and nothing worked.
For the last year, we only worked with DV tapes, so we didn’t need the XDCAM Transfer to work.

Now, we got another mac (with the same specs) fixed (this whole year this other mac wasn’t working – things here are slowww!) and installed FCP and XDCAM Transfer. There, things worked fine, no missing codecs, so I did the simplest thing I could: copied the QuickTime Components (SystemDrive/Library/QuickTime) from the “new” Mac to the old one, that had the missing codecs. Et voilà!

Thanks everyone for the tips, though!
