I’m from an Avid background, been using FCP for a while but not in a professional environment so there might be a blindingly obvious answer to this question! Anyway, we had a lot of aerial footage shot hand-held from a helicopter, which as you can imagine had a bit of shake. Applied smooth cam to a couple of shots in the timeline which were about 3 seconds long, the analyzing clip window popped up and showed 6 hours to go so I assume it was analyzing the master clip rather than what was in the edit. The only way I could think of getting round this was to export a same as source QuickTime of the shot, re-import, cut over the top and apply Smooth cam to that. Seems like the long way round and looses reference to the source which I like to try and avoid. Is there another way?

[Simon Ryan] “Is there another way?”

AFAIK that’s the way it’s done.

You do need to bounce the clip to avoid smoothcam analysing the entire clip. But you don’t need to lose your tape+timecode info:

Match frame your shot into the viewer – your mark in and mark out should appear along with the shot. I usually give the shot handles in case I want to tweak later – but if there’s a really substantial shift in the framing I don’t do this, as it results in the shot being blown up more than it needs to be.

Export from the viewer (I have a folder named ‘Projectname/Bounce) and then drag from the folder back into the project.

By exporting from the viewer rather than the timeline you will keep the tape name and timecode info intact.

Normally, once I have the curs which I want to apply SmmothCam, I line all of them in a sequence and use Media Manager. Then I open the new project and apply SmoothCam to the sequence. Only the stuff in the sequence is analyzed. You can let them some holders if you want.
Sure, you must replace manually the “smoothed” footage in your time-line.
