Are you monitoring out via FW or a card like from AJA or Blackmagic?

I’d change your sequence’s compressor settings from ProRes HQ to regular ProRes as that should decrease the render times and none of the formats you listed would take advantage of the higher bitrate HQ needs.

1. In A/V settings, A/V devices tab make sure “Mirror on Desktop” is turned On. If it is turned Off your Canvas window will not playback video if you are trying to play-out to an external monitor.

2. Double check that your sequence settings match up with your video output settings. For example, if I am working in a 720p60 timeline but I have my video output set to 1080i50 I won’t get video playback on my external monitor but I will still see an image when the playhead is stopped and I can still scrub though it.

If the Mac itself isn’t seeing the deck it’s most likely a hardware problem. Either the FW port on your deck is bad, the FW port on your Mac you are trying to use is bad or the FW cable you are trying to use is bad.

Just use the DV-NTSC East Setup (or DV PAL if you are in PAL land, of course).

N toggles snapping on and off and F10 does an overwrite edit.

We have similar problems w/either our DSR-11’s or DSR-1500’s (can’t remember which) where they won’t work w/our Mac Pros using a 400-800 cable. We have a a few different Sony HDV decks (can’t remember the model numbers off the top of my head) and they work fine using the 400-800 cables on the same machines.

You can select a clip(s) in the timeline and hit, I think, control+b to turn the clips ‘off’. They’ll still be in the timeline but FCP won’t see them.

I’ve seen this mentioned a few times else where and it looks like a known issue where the workaround is to just rename the files like you’ve been doing.
