  • My video playback is not playing back

Posted by Heath Alseike on April 7, 2010 at 10:44 pm

I am editing in final cut and haven’t used my video playback in a bit. I turned it on and it is not playing back. It is displaying just fine. When I scrub through the video I can see the playback changing along with the canvas. However when I hit play the audio plays but the video does not. Not in the playback or the canvas. When I hit pause they both display the current frame it should be on it just won’t play. I tried a smaller sequence and project to see if that would help and it did not. Does any one know why this is happening and how I can get it to play. Could this be a RAM issue?

Sounds odd. Maybe try trashing prefs. That is, if everything worked fine before.

Are you trying to playback h.264?

    1. In A/V settings, A/V devices tab make sure “Mirror on Desktop” is turned On. If it is turned Off your Canvas window will not playback video if you are trying to play-out to an external monitor.

    2. Double check that your sequence settings match up with your video output settings. For example, if I am working in a 720p60 timeline but I have my video output set to 1080i50 I won’t get video playback on my external monitor but I will still see an image when the playhead is stopped and I can still scrub though it.

I was given this project form another editor. All the settings match up, it is DV/DVCPRO – NTSC not h.264. However, I tried opening another project that I had done myself and I am having the same problem. Then in a third project I tried with a small 30 sec video only, the playback played laggy but the canvas is still not playing. The canvas plays fine when I turn the playback off.

Try setting your canvas window to “fit to window” for playback (the left hand drop down menu above the canvas video display – that might help.

Are you monitoring out via FW or a card like from AJA or Blackmagic?

My output to an external monitor is HDMI. I did make sure my canvas is fit to window. Like I said the playback display is not the issue. That works I have no problems there. I can see the canvas on my external monitors, I have even tried two different ones. Its just once I hit play the video does not play. The audio does just not the video. The display changes on the playback monitor when it is paused to whatever frame it I’m on and I can see the display change when I scrub through. I just can’t figure out why it won’t play back.

Well, it sounds like the playback display is the issue because you are not getting any playback on the display. 😉

Since you’ve made sure your Video Playback settings in FCP match your Sequence settings I’d try reinstalling the drivers for your I/O card and/or contacting the maker of the card for tech support. Have you tried just powering the whole machine down and rebooting?

I did try the restart. Im not sure how to reinstall the drivers on my video card. I will figure that out and try that. At this point I am pretty sure that it is a video card or ram issue. Appreciate your advice.

    hey

I’m having the same problem as you : just the playback on my external monitor driven by Blackmagic not following, sticking to a frame, although all settings seem correct. Interested to know if you solved it eventually.
I’m working on a Mac Pro 2×2.93 Ghz Quad core Intel Xeon with 8GB Ram, Final cut pro 7 and Blackmagic.
I’m not really a hardware genius so here’s all the info from System profiler
Graphics card is NVIDIA Geforce GT 120. It’s in slot 1 and also serves as PCI card, along with pcibdbd.a120 in slot 3
    i’ve got 4 2GB ram chips in slots 1 2 and 5 6, leaving 3 4 and 7 8 empty. They’re DDR3 ECC type chips.
I would really appreciate your feedback.

    Thanks
