  • Hey Jack,

I’ve found that going into your sequence settings and changing the editing mode to custom, then changing the video preview file format from I-Frame Only MPEG to something else (I usually use Quicktime Apple ProRes 422, although it can be a bit of a harddrive hog depending on the size of your project) that has seemed to fix the problem.

Give it try, hopefully that helps. It can be extremely frustrating always having to force quit when you just want to get an edit done.

    Best of luck!

  • I am admist this torture as well, in the middle of a project I now need to color correct. My canvas keeps freezing and it makes it very time consuming to keep crashing and restarting. Is there a workflow or method to save the project so I can open it in CC and not CC 2014? Or is exporting an EDL my only option?

    Any takers?

Is this just some weird glitch I’m going to have to deal with? Maybe re-do all the titles?

    Hey Rob,

Here’s the deal. You need to compress your video using Apple’s Compressor, and I’d suggest to do a test before you go ahead and compress the whole thing. Take like a 2 min section and export it out (make your in and out points on the timeline>export>quicktime movie, and make sure “make self contained” is NOT checked…well, I guess it doesn’t really matter.) Name it test file or something original.

Then take that file and drag and drop it into compressor. Then find the DVD compression called “Fastest Encode 90 min” and duplicate it. You need to then make sure your duplicated setting is highlighted and then click the inspector. Here you can rename it to widescreen 90 min fastest encode or what have you. Then click on the MPEG-2 in your duplicated folder (hope I’m not losing you) and click on your inspector again. There are 6 boxes or tabs at the top of the inspector, go to the second one over named Encoder. Under the Video Format tab there are 4 fields that are grayed out, called Video Format, Frame Rate, Apsect Ratio, and Field Dominence. You want to change the Aspect Ratio to 16:9. Click the cog wheel to the right of Aspect Ratio and you can then change the setting. Hit Save.

And that’s it! Now just drag and drop the new setting folder onto your test clip and start encoding.

Once compressed, bring the encoded file into DVD Studio Pro and it should take care of the rest. If you want to make your DVD menu widescreen as well you can change the project settings in DVD Studio.

If I was at all confusing let me know and I can try to elaborate. Let me know how you make out.

Make sure in AE when you add to the render queue that you go into the Lossless settings, and change the video output channels setting from RGB to RGB+Alpha, otherwise you won’t get an alpha channel exported in your file.

July 11, 2008 at 8:24 pm in reply to: Help with XDCAM

    Hey Ken,
If you get an XDCAM reader (they’re a lot less expensive than an XDCAM deck) you can load the disc onto your harddrive, then use a free program called XDCAM transfer (www.sony.com/xdcam ) to make the MXF files into Quicktime. Unless you have an XDCAM camera or deck or reader, you won’t be able to see the footage. Hope this helped!

I don’t want to sound condescending, but have you checked to make sure the little record safe switch on the tape is set to record and not save? I’ve made this mistake before which is why I ask.

June 30, 2008 at 7:22 pm in reply to: Add default transition to all clips

    Hey Dwayne,
Here is a link to your question – the trick is to drag all of the clips you want a transition to into the canvas window and replace with transition (it will be your default transition which can easily be changed). Hope this helps!

    Hey guys,
So switching the Kona card to PCI/E slot #2 worked. I haven’t had any more problems thus far. Hope you guys find the same blissfulness by switching PCI/E slots as I did.
