I ran across a problem with a Panasonic deck where we captured through firewire, Using Capture Now, and let it roll to the end of the tape (where it would usually give you the “End of Tape” warning) all the clips that were captured at the end of the tape had the audio frequency set at 47.51 (find under EDIT – Item Properties). This audio slowdown had a field day with the audio sync. The only fix was to recapture with an out before the end of the shot part of the tape. This applies to batch capture and Capture Now. You have to hit escape before it goes black. I have only found this on 1 Panasonic deck using firewire. Sonys are fine. Anyone else have this problem?

First Fix your permissions (Disk Utility) then do a safe boot (restart holding down the shift key)
if this doesn’t work download the latest OS (combo) update for the version you are using and reinstall it.
I cannot offer anymore advice since I do not know what software, processor, etc. that you are using.

I would stay away from the WD Mybook series (OK for storage not for editing)
G-tech, OWC, Wiebetch and also rocstor are good sources. FW800 and go for a 2 drive raid
for better throughput. I have been using OWC for years and have not had a problem.

If you are delivering it on a DVD I would do the subtitles there. You can have 1 video with different audio options and subtitle options. Make it once and deliver it to many places.

  • One option is to get a ziplock bag, put the tapes in the bag along with desiccant pouches for a couple of days. (the little bags that say “do not eat” that come with electronics) You can find them in photo or camera shops. This will remove the moisture but if the tapes were stored near a kitchen or in a room where someone smoked there could be other residue problems.
    Hope this helps,

  • I could be a problem with how the tapes were stored. If they collected moisture etc.
Try a tape that you know has something good on it and see if the problem persist.
Be sure to do a head cleaning before just in case your clients tapes left residual gunk on the heads. The other alternative is to try another deck and see if it is compatable.

mmmm…. Just a theory, all the sub clips have continus timecode from one clip to the next. In an effort to be effecient Media manager sees them as one clip. To separate them out select every other clip, place them in a separate bin and media manage in 2 steps. first the odds then the evens, Not glamorous but it works.

  • I had luck with Ver 2. It did not have filters transitions etc so I am not sure how anything but cuts translates.

I would get a quad machine and put the leftover cash into ram. This will give you better performance in Motion and FCP. The 8 core (although nice) is not fully utillized and even if Leopard solves this it could be 6 months before they stabilize the bugs.
