I did assume that to be the obvious answer as to why. It does seem eerily similar to the problem Media 100 learned the hard way by not opening up to third parties. Now Media 100 can use AJA but it’s too late. With video becoming file based that BOB will be phased out slowly but surly. I’m 90% XDCAM and opening up workflows to P2. What then would I need a BOB for? I can write back to XDCAM and P2 and do an SDI dub to DigiBeta if it’ll save me 25k.

Maybe I’m missing something but this begs the question: Why doesn’t AJA or Blackmagic make a product for Avid? Proprietary reasons?

I use the HP Compaq nw9440 Mobile Workstation with the NVIDIA Quadro FX1500M with 256MB of video memory. Spec. as per Avid. I often use a second 20″ monitor with that set up.

Aspect ratio is and always has been 16:9 in the media100 hardware…hence the problem.

I could not drop it on the timeline. It was rendered 16:9 in AE with media 100 720 codec but that was not enough. The only thing that would work was Animation. The hardware was set to 16:9 when I imported it.

That’s the first thing I tried. I ended up having to render as an Animation from a comp set to DV widescreen. Media 100 codec would not let me do it.

One more thing. I use it regularly with a Firestore for quick turnaround programing. The Firestore can capture Avid OMF DV25 in realtime. Drag and drop up-to 3 hours of footage instantly using the Firestore as the external drive. At that point I master to a DSR 1500 via 1394 with no problem.

I use the same laptop with a second monitor no problem. It’s not two separate monitors. The laptop monitor with a second 19″.
The whole setup is very impressive. I’m new to Avid since August of last year. This laptop is my first experience with Avid. I also have the analog Mojo to feed a Sony High Rez Bcast monitor and a couple of Klipch audio monitors. I can’t say enough about that setup. I’m itching to add a Bella keyboard to see if that set up will work with the laptop. The laptop is actually faster with After Effects than my G5 D2.5 Mac.
I import XDCam files at 4x real time. Deck control with my Beta SP deck is flawless. Batch digitizing works very well. Multi camera is very sweet. If my clients don’t look closely they would never know I was using a laptop. They’re always loking at the 20″ Sony.
At this point I’m using 2 LaCie drives to edit mostly DV25. I am having difficulty importing 25Mb HD XDCam files for some reason. Not enough experience with Avid to know what the problem is.
