Hi Lee,
Let’s say the composition you want to mirror is called COMP_1 and it has some text across the middle. Create a new comp called COMP_2. Drag COMP_1 into COMP_2 twice so you got two copies of COMP_1 in your new comp. Now twirl down the top COMP_1s scale modifier. Click on the little chain-link graphic which means you can now individually resize X and Y. Now simply make Y = -60. Leave X at 100. You’ll see if has flipped your composition AND squished it a bit. Now all you need to do is position it up and down a bit so the bottom and top meet. You can then set the top comp’s transparency to 75% to give it a more reflective look. Try also applying some wave effects if you want a watery look.

Hi Manny,
Personally I think it was designed in a 3D application. It just seems that Belief have exceptional control over such elements as particles, 3D text, background etc which at that level would be very difficult in AE. Now, that’s not to say you cannot get something like this in AE. I would research Trapcode’s Particular as it would be able to easily create 3D lines that form a word and allow you to zoom around it with a camera. You could even fake the movie transition part by using the lines that Particular creates as displacement and then just fade across. I just think a 3D app will be able to go that extra mile to make that effect really shine.

Hi,
For scene information click somewhere in your Object Manager and press CTRL+I. That will give you your polycount. What type of machine are you rendering on? Hardware can obviously have a huge impact on render times. To be quite honest, we have done short logos of 50-75 frames that took over 24hrs. It’s really hard to make a call on how long something should or shouldn’t take unless you can state what the scene is made of. Having a massive amount of refraction, animated noise with high octave counts etc etc can all have substantial impact on render times even though you may not be using the obvious time killers like radiosity, AO, Blurry reflections etc etc.
If there are several objects/components in the scene, turn some off (make the little dots next to the object red) and re-render to see where the render-impact is.

Go into the folder with the numbered frames, click on the first one and you should see a check-box at the bottom saying something like “Treat as sequence” or “Footage” or something (sorry, not infront of AE). That tells AE not to bring them in individually but as footage.

Just contacted a collegue who is using AE7 and asked him to check because I use an older version of AE and, as you said, it works quite well. He reported the same problem, the Alt+ trick doesn’t work. This is bad news as we do digital signage for other countries that often make use of these special characters. Upgrading to AE7 would make this quite a pain.

Can’t guarantee it’s the same thing for you, but AE has always had issues with MP3s. I have seen your exact situation and it was solved by converting the mp3 to a WAV before using it in AE. Now I don’t even bother with anything other than WAV and haven’t had a problem since.

You might also want to look at the “e4 ident” by Chris Cairns. I think it was done before the above spot. Not sure thought.

Not sure if you mean bending as in literally bending or simply dissapearing into the distance. If you want it to dissapear into the distance I would simply write some text, then click the little 3D cube next to the layer which gives you x,y and Z axis as well as three rotational axis.
Now if you rotate your text slightly on the Y axis by, say, 45 degrees you’ll find that on one side the text is larger and on the other small. That’s the 3D effects that AE can fake.
Now all you have to do is animate the X-Anchor position and your text will come in and out of the distance. Play with the Y-rotation etc to see what other ways you can point the text.

You mention the camera is moving. You should then be able to place a large layer with a background in 3D behind the snowflakes. Depending on how far away you place it on the Z axis (away from the camera) it will move faster or slower. Turn on the motion blur and you’re done. Just make the layer big enough to suit the background.
Not liking that idea, just stick a big 2D layer behind the snowflakes, turn on motion blur and animate it along the Y axis as you already mentioned.

Hey Michael,
Yeah it’s a nice place. Scale of production overall is a lot smaller here than in the states or europe purely due to the population size. So we don’t have as many studios as you guys, but we also have a lot less work, as well. It depends a lot whether you simply want to hop on board with an existing firm or start your own again over here.
