    Hi –

I’m an editor who is putting together a corp. video which uses my clients 3D animated logo. I was able to download the native CD4 file from their ftp site so that I could render out the animation to use for my purposes. It’s a simple 75 frame rotating logo, with a target camera move, some lights, simple materials (w/transp) for the logo object and background, etc.

I’ve got my render settings adjusted for 720×456 D1 NTSC at a 29.97 frame rate, quicktime animation set to best, no advanced render stuff, no motion blur. A fairly straigh forward render you would think….

Why is my render taking 7 hours to complete?

Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

    Tom

    radiosity?

try to bake as much as you can!

No radiosity enabled. No advanced render effects at all.

Not quite sure what “bake as much as you can” means.

    Thanks

Perhaps there’s just a massive poly count.

I can’t think what would cause it to be so slow. Blurry reflections (dispersion in reflect channel) and area shadows can cause slowdowns, but it shouldn’t be that bad. I’m rendering PAL D1 resolution for my current job, with scenes consisting of hundreds of objects and up to half a million polys. Depending on the scene, frames are taking anywhere from 11 seconds to just over a minute on my AMD X2 2.6Ghz machine.

Thanks Noah. How can I determine the poly count? Can I reduce it without effecting the qualitiy of the output?

Sorry for the lame newbie questions.

    Hi,

For scene information click somewhere in your Object Manager and press CTRL+I. That will give you your polycount. What type of machine are you rendering on? Hardware can obviously have a huge impact on render times. To be quite honest, we have done short logos of 50-75 frames that took over 24hrs. It’s really hard to make a call on how long something should or shouldn’t take unless you can state what the scene is made of. Having a massive amount of refraction, animated noise with high octave counts etc etc can all have substantial impact on render times even though you may not be using the obvious time killers like radiosity, AO, Blurry reflections etc etc.

If there are several objects/components in the scene, turn some off (make the little dots next to the object red) and re-render to see where the render-impact is.

    Good luck.

    Alex
