February 17, 2012 at 10:55 am in reply to: Duplicating and trimming clips vs using FavoritesHey John
Very interesting point you make and one that I have been thinking about for a few months and testing different methods. From the amount of replies you’ve had, it seems not many people are actually considering the long form dock workflow like this in X yet. I am surprised as this is crucial to me and to pro workflow.
With the new 10.0.3 update I note favourites are now searchable however I am also thinking about the “sub clip” method.
So now you could duplicate a clip, rename it, select the range as a favourite, assign a keyword and filter for favourites. This effectively creates a sub clip but a better creation process would be to select a range and then choose “make sub clip” from the menu, which is something I hope might appear in the future as it is effectively the same thing but done in a different order.Have you got any further down the line? Did you choose a method for logging and subclipping?
Cheers

Hi Andrew
I did exactly this workflow, (without the progressive step) on a huge multicam project which mixed HDV and HDCAM. It worked fine.
There is a cheeky workaround you could use however…
Go to Easy Set-Up in FCP and select the ProRes filter but leave the frame rate unselected.
In amongst these ProRes settings you will see one called HDV to ProRes24pChoose this setting – I know 24p sounds odd but try it. This setting will allow you to capture HDV to ProRes in realtime without any capture card and with the frame rate of the rushes. The only disadvantage is that you will not have deck control but it is a small price to pay. As always, name your footage first.
Pretty cool huh?

August 29, 2009 at 5:33 pm in reply to: Final Cut Pro 7 crashing when updating a project file from FCP 6Hi Jonathan
Before you do a clean install which you should probably do anyway try this.
If you have another computer running FCP6 – doesn’t matter if it is a slow computer – try opening the project on that. If the project opens, then export an XML file of the project and try importing that into FCP7. This may not fix everything but it may allow you to start working on the project now and worry about the cause of the problem later.
If you don’t have FCP6 still installed, find a mate who has and then email them your FCP project (zipped into a protective file) and ask them to create the XML for you.
Hope that might help

What Shane says is absolutely true and you only have a day to wait however…
From the new Pro Res White Paper (published by Apple)…
Today’s Mac notebook and desktop machines rely on multicore processing, and so
the speed of a fast editing decoder must scale up—meaning that decoding time per
frame should decrease—as the number of processing cores increases. Many industry
codec implementations “hit the wall” and do not realize further performance gains as
more processors are added, but Apple ProRes codecs continue to get faster as more
cores are added, as the following chart shows.A hint that we might be in for a lot of fun in the coming weeks.
Nothing about 64-bit but interesting all the same.Cheers

Hi Annette
The DaVinci should be able to read the EDL whatever sort mode is used.
The sort mode simply determines in which order the shots are accessed. However, it would seem very odd to be using a DaVinci to do an autoconform which one would normally do in an online suite which is optimised for that purpose and most probably very much cheaper than a DaVinci.
If the source is already on tape then you just simply send the master tape (once its conformed) and the cutlist to the DaVinci for a tape-to-tape grade. Then the colorist doesn’t have to worry about the source tapes.
EDL format CMX 3600 – all options, notes etc turned off. Has been working for me for many years.

Hi there
I am a bit of an old hand at Multiclip. You may be able to work with subclips but if you think about what is happening you might be better off doing what Shane suggested.
With six subclips created from just two media files, FCP will be trying to access data from each file three times AT THE SAME TIME. This cannot possibly be good for playback.
You can use reference movies and subclips with multicam but I would divide the footage up and don’t cut corners.

Hey Neil
Nice to find you here. I have installed FCP 6.06 on several different machines and they all broke Compressor. Had to reinstall. Maybe this ProKit update fixes that?
I’ll let you find out first 🙂

I am getting spam emails continually sent to an email address that I used as a signature on some of my posts.
I “googled” this so I email address and the only thing that comes up is the Cow posts – I therefore assume that probably this is the source of the spam (from spiders searching through posts for email addresses).
It is my own fault for doing this but I would be so grateful if you could remove these posts and help me clear my inbox of this spam. There are only a few posts.
Thank you

I was checking the MM because I want to use Color to grade the whole thing at Pro Res. I know that I can take HDV into Color, however I have heard that there is some trouble getting out of Color with HDV especially with sync issues (this is a long form doc).
I have already experienced some issues with upgrading concerning anamorphic flags carrying across incorrectly.
It is better to be safe than sorry.

Hi Walter
I have just spent the entire weekend testing the Media Manager in FCP6 on an HDV project updated from FCP 5.1.4. The reason I was doing this was to see if it was safe to actually continue working on this project in 6 and commit the carnal sin of “upgrading midway through a project”.
I have to say that there are several issues connected with XML, sync and aspect ratios flags. I love 6 – it has all the features I need to get this project finished (smoothcam, ProRes and Color particularly) however I am as yet unconvinced by any of the routes I have tested so far to transfer my already complicated 2 hour edit into 6.
I may be looking at using an EDL for the finishing stage!!!
