    Hi,
I’m a high school senior, and I’d also like to end up somewhere ILM eventually, working on FX. So, does anyone have any suggestions as to where to go to college, and what to study? Note: I’m NOT looking for a an FX school, but rather a major university, such as USC or UM, etc.

Also, how hard would you say it would be to land a job at ILM, and what do they look for?

This is just an idea… i really dont know that much about this… but you could try messing around with keylight and matting around the hair area… just an idea.

Sorry, this is very unhelpful, but I just feel the need to comment on that video. (this is in no way commenting on anybody who enjoys it.) I really love the graphics etc. used in that video, but I really feel that the entire thing is just another waste of motion graphics, and that the graphics, rather than natural, look like they are trying way too hard to achieve some sort of “revolutionary” look. While I love a good motion graphic, I think that they are completely without purpose in this video. Sorry for posting this, and I am not trying to insult any of the posters in this thread. Thanks for listening.

ok, thanks for the advice. While Andrew’s tutorial looks great and I’ll probably do it later, I’m not looking for a DOF simulation on live footage, I’m looking for the effect where it looks like a camera is focusing in on my motion graphics comp, so more of a change in focus rather than a depth of field. And assuming that the adjustment layer fast blur is still the best way to do it, is there any kind of keyframe interpolation that would make the focus in more realistic?

And even more pathetic, I’ve e-mailed Bill before notifying of him of yet another who used the exact tutorial footage in their demo reel. I guess he could take it as a compliment that so many people feel the need to copy that exact tutorial…?

  • Yes, I think going to something like quicktime animation, and then to H.264 would give you very good results, and the end product should still only be a few MB’s.

Quicktime H.264 would be good, and sorenson 3 quicktime. File sizes shouldn’t be a problem with these codecs.
