    FCP (5.1)
    QT Pro (7)
    Squeeze Compression Suite (4.3)

I want to export a series of 2-minute videos for embedding on a web page using the software listed above. Given the requirement that users with both dial-up and cable modem will be accessing these videos my questions are:

What would be a good mix of file types/data rates to upload to the server.

    Display size will be 320×240.

    Thanks!

Quicktime H.264 would be good, and sorenson 3 quicktime. File sizes shouldn’t be a problem with these codecs.

Except, of course, that many (maybe half) browsers do not have Quicktime plug-in support, and H.264 requires QT 7, further reducing the % of people you will reach.

You might want to look again at Flash video …

Mmmmm – where do you get your (suspect) information from?

It’s very hard to get current, accurate data on what browsers have what plug-ins / ActiveX controls installed. You could look at this https://www.prestospace.org/project/deliverables/D12-6.pdf for more if you wanted to.

The “usual suspects” here are the Macromedia stats (hardly unbiased, suggesting 68% for QT) and the Frost & Sullivan report from 2004 – which also has to struggle through the same fog of data (suggesting around 37%).
Sfaik Apple does not publish an estimate for % of systems with QT player installed.

Detailed web metrics from a sample of high-traffic sites would be most welcome, if anyone can point to them?

    iPod = iTunes = Quicktime.
Most iPod owners use Windows. All Macs have Quicktime. As such IMHO I’d lean more towards the 68% than 37%.

BTW you don’t need Quicktime to view H.264 media, but it helps 😉

i had this same question as i downconvert my ntsc videos for web use.

my web builders say .flv to prevent downloads
(i’m not offering downloads, it’s client owned design work.)

i’m wondering if i should convert them to square pixels ?

iPod size 320×240 is a downsize of DV NTSC SQUARE PIZEL 720×540.

my originals are 720×480. any thoughts ?

I’d go with what your website builders are suggesting. Make sure they are encoding using the latest version of the Flash CODEC.

As for square vs non-square, this page may help:
