You can specify the length of the time that is previewed using the Cursor preview duration box on the Editing tab of the Preferences dialog
Consider using commercial scripts. For example, Vegasaur Markers tool can do it with a single click. It will keep (or delete) all media that lies between each pair of markers. Thus, everything between markers 2 and 3, and between markers 4 and 5 (and so forth) will be deleted. In addition it will ripple the contents of the timeline after the removal.
What is your ultimate goal?
To make a DVD with subtitles, you should use DVD Architect.
To convert srt subtitles to closed captions, go to Tools > Scripting > Import Subtitles (something like that).

You can save the project, which includes the required media files and open it whenever you want to start a new project (aka template). And don’t forget to give it a new name.

There is a hidden option in Internal settings. Hold down the Shift key and click Options > Preferences. Open Internal tab. Type “Enable scanning for closed caption” in the search box and switch it OFF (enter FALSE and click OK)
