VirtualDub is perfect for lossless AVI trimming (what you need). For other formats look at SolveigMM Video Splitter, AVS Video Remaker etc.

Vegas can read timecode/datetime information from many formats, but not from Canon cameras (as far as I know). You can give them a suggestion.

There is an option in Preferences that enables Vegas to close media files when you open them in external applications for editing, and reopen them again when you switch to Vegas.

It is a part of Vegasaur extension and it is not free. You can create a mosaic manually, using Track Motion, but of course, it will take a lot more of your time.
