  • Best rendering settings to keep film grain effect

Posted by Riccardo Leone on May 2, 2013 at 5:56 pm

    Hi there!
I looked through the forum but I didn’t find any answers for my question.

The point is: I realized a short film in HD which I am planning to put online (let’s say Vimeo). I thus followed the compression guidelines that Vimeo provides on their website. Apparently, the best solution for Vegas users is to render in mp4.

However, I am not really satisfied with the results. Since I used a film grain effect, the .mp4 makes all the grains look like squares, as if you were watching a poor compressed footage.

Do you have any suggestions for formats which are fine in quality (especially regarding the film grain) and acceptable for uploading on a website like Vimeo?

    Thanks!

It’s simple: the more bitrate – better quality.

For example, is the quality of this video acceptable for you?

p.s. don’t use YouTube for that – it will kill the grain 🙂

That really makes sense. What setting should I use for the bitrate? I was using Max: 5mln, Avg: 4mln (as I used to do in Premiere Pro, as long as I remember). What would you suggest?

The video you posted has a great looking film grain, that’s for sure. Mine might be a little worse also ’cause I’m using Vegas own plug in…

Also, when I said “let’s say Vimeo” I kinda meant “Vimeo”.

I would try with Avg: 10-15mln

Great, thank you. So you say Average 10mln and Max 15mln? Or Max what?
Sorry, rendering is not my favorite activity ever, I’m a bit slow in understanding 🙂

Also I noticed now another quite annoying problem with mp4 (in the final product there are some random flashes of images that shouldn’t be there, once in a while), but I suppose I’d have to open another thread for that…
