The latest Vegas versions allow you to import media from a project (File > Import > Media from Project).

Yes, extensions can slow down Vegas a little bit at startup (loading, initialization etc.).

There are templates for Vegas Pro – regular Vegas projects (.veg files, not plugins) that you can open, insert your images/clips, add your music and render.

Use Track Motion to create video walls (you can also use Pan/Crop Masks for more complex video walls).
Save each video wall as a separate project.
Combine all video walls in a master project (using nested projects) – add transitions etc.
