Those are just subfolders in the “Emitter Libraries” folder. Copy them all over.

If you don’t see the subfolders, then you’re looking at the wrong “Emitter Libraries” folder.

Just find your “Emitter Libraries” folder — it should have lots of .il3 files in it. Copy everything in that folder from the old computer to the new one.

Note that if you have pIAE or pIOFX installed too you may have more than one “Emitter Libraries” folder. You should be able to tell which one is actually being used.

It’s a good idea to backup this “Emitter Libraries” folder once in a while too, unless you never edit emitters or create your own and don’t mind downloading everything again if you lose it.

  • Windows API changes forced the removal of previews.

The workaround is use “Manage” instead of “Load Library”. You get thumbnails plus animated previews.

The Pro Emitters are no longer for sale. You’ll see them again soon though…

We didn’t make an announcement because it really only affects people who need to reactivate. It’s not a “major update”, mainly the licensing change and a few other bug fixes. It is not 64-bit.

Since the licensing change was the main issue (the old licensing was difficult to support and was giving lots of people trouble), we decided to let people know as needed — when they contacted us to reactivate.

I guess I don’t get emails from the COW anymore, so my replies will be slow…

This is expected. You have to download the update from the GenArts support pages for pI.

See if it’s working now. It should at least show that a new version is available — I’m curious to see what it does when you try to update though.

Click the “more info” button in the AutoUpdate dialog and it should take you to the GenArts particleIllusion support page where you *can* download the latest version.

The Mac version has a bug in the update check that was revealed when the server was changed a few years ago. The Windows version… I’m not sure why it wouldn’t be working. It should at least be showing the latest emitter library… I know that the automatic installation of updates won’t work anymore, but it should at least be able to show you an update is available… I think I’ll have to make a change in the data file for that…

Hmm, it seems I forgot to update the emitter library data file too. Check again in about 30 minutes.

May 29, 2013 at 3:12 pm in reply to: How Do You Create Particle Shapes

One important thing I forgot to suggest as a great way to make new particle images: use pI itself to make them!

For instance, there are some great spiky light blob looking emitters. Create a new project that is 256×256 or 512×512, add one of these emitters, then render the single frame you like best. Or create a sequence to import as an animated shape — but don’t get carried away on the number of frames.

Also. it’s important to make sure that the edges of your image are completely black (0,0,0). If you have even a very slight amount of color (1,1,1) then when this image is used it may result in hard/sharp edges where many of these particles overlap.

Almost any way you want, but I’d ditch MSPaint as it’s way too limited. Photographs of an image on black, create in Photoshop manually, use a 3D program, algorithmic generators — these are all ways that the shape images were created. It’s about being proficient with paint apps for blending, erasing parts, fixing lighting, etc.

Not really an aspect of particleIllusion.
